tool kit help

I want a good tool kit, not a amazing one as i wont be using it to the extent of a mechanic however i want to be sure I will have the right tools and strength in the metals for the jobs, I've decided the only way to learn about cars is to do it yourself, just like every one has told me, so I've decided im going to take my first steps, Firstly im going to decat the car, fit my fuel pump, fit my FCD and hope fully by doing that i will have seen enough to fit a delimiter and boost controler, I am good with a soldering iron as i used to fit guitar pick ups for mates so i am confident at that. I Need a service & repair manual but cant find one, so with the money to fit springs and decats i've decided to buy tools and go for it.

Can any one recomend me a good tool kit with enought tools to do the following, I under stand some jobs maybe harder should any thing be siezed, this will be a learning curve on how to fix them.

Any advice on doing these jobs would be great.

I've got my jack and axle stands ready lol.

first thing i would invest in is a decent socket set and a long reach bar for the more diffciult bolts which can be a pain to get off if seized etc.

just to add a few jobs ive done on the supe have needed burning gear to get some of the seized nuts off etc.

got my tool kit today :D its a cooper hand tools set it's meant to be a really good one the craftsmanship looks real nice, the sockets, ratchets, nut drivers and bits are made with chrome vanadium and every thing has a life time warrenty It is 211 peace's set(sockets, rachets, spanners screw drivers), got a torch which we already had, got some axle stands which we already had.

Oh im going to buy a long extention arm for the ratchet as advised.

I need a g-glamp for breaks, I want a mole grip, what else do I need,

As soon as i get my gasket and bolts for my decats i will do them this week and report back with the results :D

Heres the set

Go for a nice Stanley kit, iv NEVER had to 'burn' anything off - Plusgas and 20 minutes later it either comes off easy or a little sustained pressure from a breaker bar (i.e. dont jerk it).

A good set of tools makes a difficult job easy.

Ratchet spanners also make things easy :)

You REALLY dont want a mole grip - they tend to just chew things up :(

The jack is £76 including Vat my kit cost £58 :eyebrows: Every thing is at kostcos so its all whole sale price, If any one needs any thing i would be willing to buy it for them and post it.

I already have a jack but i wanted it because it looked wicked, there selling on ebay for £100 then postage on top, the tool kit on ebay is £85, Its all american or canadian so good gear.

so dont bother with mole grips, what other bits should i get and what will i need to do the first decat.. i hear that its a royal PITA to get close to the bolts?

yeah just been told that the bolts are a particularly challenging proposition, I've been advised that I may need a drill to drill the bolts out and tap and die set to retap it as well due to the bolt heads been seized and snapping :(

Think i might go to my dads mate, he is a ex bmw mechanic who said he would be happy to look at things and show me so i might go to his to do them and least i will have him to assit me and help on that.

It wont need to do that unless you are pretty crap at it - if you try to shock them off they may well sheer.

Iv done a decat on 5 or 6 Supras now and never sheered anything. Thats with only using small ramps.

Nice to see the enthusiasm Lew. :) Ask Dads mech mate for a sensible assortment of tools. He'll know most everything needed.

Investment wise, a couple of torque wrenches 6 - 60 NM and 40 - 200 NM, £100, decent vernier caliper £50, ratchet spanner set (as stated) £50

Also Halfrauds do a set of short combination spanners, 'kin brilliant for the awkward little places all round the engine bay, £15

Pick taps and dies up as you need 'em.

There's loads more but you'll pick those up too as you go along.:)

Pry bars are always useful, waterpump pliers and long nosed pliers for odd jobs on the car and a multimeter for electrics, Snap on are the best and Facom tools are quality and very well priced but draper are good if you are on a budget.
