Just curious, when it comes to MOT day, if i can't find a nice MOT man, am i worth my while changing over the 2nd de-cat pipe myself or will the garage take buttons to change it over? I'm getting myself axle stands and a trolly jack so i should be able to access the exhaust system ok but i don't have any experience in doing it. Is it something i should be able to handle myself quite easily? Ie a few bolts some sealant and a bit of elbow grease? or is it something that will cost me £20 for the garage to do and save me the hassle? I'm getting a double de-cat in the next few days. So 2nd question. Is the first cat a bit of a pain to swop over? The reason i ask is i have done a few searches and its only really the 2nd cat that is mentioned for MOT purposes. Was wondering if i should save myself the money of having it changed over and give it a bash myself. Any advice would be appreciated. merckx Posted April 26, 2008 Share Posted April 26, 2008 It should cost less than £20 for a garage to fit the 2nd one. The 1st cat is a little awkward to fit, a socket with a long extension with a universal joint is useful. Easy when you've done it a few times though. I always put my car up on ramps which gives me plenty of room to work, I wouldn't like to do it at axle stand height. I suppose doing stuff like this depends on how competent you are with a spanner, the problem with removing the first cat is that there is a possibility that you may shear off a stud. Scott Posted April 26, 2008 Author Share Posted April 26, 2008 I'm pretty handy with a spanner to be honest but i'm used to working on aeroplane engines, not cars. I don't really fancy doing the 1st cat on axle stands, if i had access to ramps then it wouldn't be a problem. Guest DaveWilko Posted April 27, 2008 Share Posted April 27, 2008 I have been putting off doing this same job for a month now lol. I got a set of studs and nuts from Envy just to be on the safe side. Knowing my luck all 3 studs will shear I was planning to use axle stands too. What would be the difficulties faced? Is it a case of not having enough leverage to get the 1st cat nuts off?
