My Getrag gearbox. More problems...

If it's a twin plate clutch and none stock flywheel the box WILL chatter. Period. If it should be an internal fault it's a weird one, as it's not a typical gearbox noise. layshaft bearing wear MIGHT cause it. I'll bet it's fine though, and it's the clutch assembly and flywheel combination. I'd live with it and see what happens :)

Hmm...yeh ok thanks chris. If it was a bearing fault then i would be p*ssed off that the technicians missed it! Come to think of it, i did ask them about

the bearings and they said "no thats ok, doesnt need fixing".

I mean, the gearchange, is as smooth as can be but a little clunky and agricultural at times...

Like you said though, i'll give it time and then see what happens...:)

However, i should mention though, when the gearbox is cold, it doesnt chatter that much but when its up to temp, you can clearly hear it!

Inside and outside of the car!

If it is the flywheel/clutch combination, why does the chatter stop when my foot is placed 3/4 of the way on the clutch??

Is it because the clutch/gearbox is underload????

Do you mean with your foot 3/4 down to the floor on the clutch, or nearly at the top of the travel releasing the clutch?

If you mean with clutch engaged its because effectively pressure plate is disengaged

it just sound like you have an aftermarket clutch mate and your worrying over nothing..when it gets hotter it will get more noisy..

Well i hope so Jurgen i really do. The only thing that bugs me is that before when i first got the car and discovered that the gearbox was knackered, it wasnt making noise and when it got fixed, the noise started and never stopped...:(

It's all sounding perfectly normal, i can either sit here for 10 minutes and explain each facet, or shower and go to the pub. Now what shall i do....? CU :)

Haha :D ;)

The only thing that worries me as i said to Jurgen was it wasnt making noise when i first got the car but after when it got fixed, it started and never stopped. Surely, the noise would of been there when i first bought the car because there was nothing whatsoever, just a nice engine note. :)

Yeh and1c, i mean with my foot pressed down 3/4 of the way down onto the clutch...so basically, load is then transferred onto the clutch and gearbox and can only presume thats why the noise stops...

Oh really?? Was the problem ever diagnosed d8moa??

nope, twice thay said thay found the problem and twice thay hadnt, also had nothing to do with the clutch as we tryed another gear box to rule out all other possiabiltys,

his car drives fine but has the same noise as you decribe and also is speed variant

As the gearbox oil warms up, it thins. The gear train clatter is then more audible as the thin oil doesn't dampen it the same. The stock dual mass flywheel was designed to stop this noise, and allow usage of a none sprung clutch centre plate, which are stronger and more reliable. Once you change the flywheel the noises start. Pressing the clutch 3/4 down alters the harmonics in the drivetrain by partly disconnecting the input shaft of the gearbox from the crankshaft.

The engine didn't start life as one from an automatic car, did it? I see examples on Supras and other makes where someone has forgotten to fit, or been ignorant of the need to fit, the input shaft spigot bearing in the back of the crank. The situation would probably be a lot worse than you cite if that was the case though. Why not get an expert with experience of the MKIV with a dual plate clutch, and / or a none stock flywheel fitted to drive it?

See attached pic.

If you look at the spline where the clutch assembly sits you can see a rectangular hole though the side of the front of the box. There are two of these, one on each side. Black plates held on with 2 or 3 10 or 12mm bolts i think.

I would put an arrow on the areas but im no good at that pc stuff. Anyone feel free to adj the pic.
