SilverSoop
See attached pic. If you look at the spline where the clutch assembly sits you can see a rectangular hole though the side of the front of the box. There are two of these, one on each side. Black plates held on with 2 or 3 10 or 12mm bolts i think. I would put an arrow on the areas but im no good at that pc stuff. Anyone feel free to adj the pic. Thanks for that edge...i now know what im looking for!

Fearless
Been searching the forum because I have exactly the same noise on my getrag gearbox. I fitted an OS Gilken triple plate clutch so expected noise however I just changed the gearbox oil and the oil I took out was thick golden oil, nothing like the red ATF oil that should have been in there. I replaced it with Amsoil Synthetic ATF (as advised by Opie oils) as the v160 is difficult to get hold of. Anyway since changing the oil (to ATF) the gearbox sounds like there is a bag of nails in there at tick over. I have put up with it for a week now but could stand it no more and have drained out the ATF and put in normal hypoid gear oil and it sounds a lot better. So I reckon that this gearbox has done a lot of work in it's life and IS worn out (even though people tell me they are indestructible) can these be rebuilt? if so who would you recommend and how much do you think it would cost? little num
well mine has done 125 thou and to be honest feels and sounds as good as new, i kill mine around a track giving it everything it has and still feels brill. I did change my oil to v160 when i bought the car 6 months back as paul wiffin sells it wifbits on here, its not cheap but original v160 is the best and only stuff i would use. Tom
they are near indestructible if serviced properly prehaps it has had a hard life with the wrong type of oil in it or it's been filled with a thicker oil to hide the noise? and it's only since replacing with the correct ATF that it's now highlighted this problem? they can be rebuilt, I'm sure on of the traders on here can get it done. BTW is the noise still there when you dip the clutch?

Fearless
am having a box rebuild at moment will keep you posted Thanks, it would be good to know how it turns out and what the cost is. I can live with it as it is for now but would be nice to get it fixed at the end of the summer maybe I understand the 6 speed box is described as "agricultural" and I have never driven another Supra wuth one to compare but I am sure mine is more of a pig than it should be. Chris Wilson
The none dual mass (none dampened) flywheels that come with most all dual and triple plate clutches cause the gear train in the gearbox, and in drive, the whole drive train, to make noises varying from a light rattle to horrendous, this car is a scrapper noises. this is why Toyota commissioned a dual mass flywheel. The gearbox is very likely fine and dandy. a heavier gear oil dampens thr gear chatter, it's as simple as that. It also works the synchro cones harder though, in stabilising the meshing speeds. Fearless
Thanks Chris, that is very reassuring, will it be causing any damage running it with the thicker oil? Maybe you could have a listen for me sometime, are you going to the Llandow trackday or Japfest this year?
Chris Wilson
Probably not, no, but it'll wear the synchros out faster due to oil drag. I definitely won't be going to Japfest, I may be going to Landow if I have a suitable car to use, when is it?
