My Getrag gearbox. More problems...

Hi all, i have been driving my Supe around for a little while now since i have got it back from the technicians at gearlink. When i got it back, the gearbox

had a "chattering" noise coming from the gearbox, the technicians cant find anything wrong with gearbox and have been looking over it again and again.

I was told it was the "endfloat on the laygear" which was causing the noise...

When the gearbox is cold, the rollerbearings are in tight and cant really hear the chattering noise but when its up to temp the rollerbearings expand and therefore, i can hear it clearly inside my supe. I have made the technicians put V160 gearoil in the gearbox just to be safe because before they were

using an ATF which was almost identical in colour and thickness to the V160.

Does anybody have any ideas what it could be please?? :(

Dont mean to be rude, but wouldnt the title...My Getrag Gearbox - More Problems...be more suitable?

Their one of the best assets of the car, and most people dont have any problems with it, hopefully someone will be along soon to problem solve

Yeh lol, that would of been more suitable but too late now. :(

I know it sounds obvious but it isn't a lightened flywheel is it?

I honestly dont know Gaz. Homer had a listen and didnt think it was but maybe, i mean my supe isnt standard. The gearbox wasnt chattering when my gearbox went in

for the first time with a broken syncro and after it came out, it started and never stopped since.

indeed, does it 'chatter' just at idle? if so what happens if you rev the engine slightly so it holds at 1500-2000rpm?

It chatters all the time but more noticable at idle. If im not moving and just revving, the chattering sounds faster i.e, in relation to the revs...

to recap it was ok, then you had it in a garage to sort the synchro, and now its chattering, i would be worrying that there is something wrong too:( hope the never dropped a bolt in it:blink:

When i first bought the car, i thought the gearbox was ok and then it started crunching. Took it to gearlink and they fixed it with the absence of

my car there. Went to go and collect her from the dealer where i bought it from and was chattering even louder than before.

Took it back to gearlink with my car and was there for 4 weeks. They told they had sorted the problem due to a chip on one of the teeth.

So i went to pick her up yet again and the noise was noticeably different. It sounded like it does now. I took it back to gearlink once again for a

check up on the gearbox and i told them to put V160 gearoil in the gearbox just to be safe as before they were using a synthetic ATF i believe.

And here i am today, with the same problem! :(

did you/they check the oil that they dropped from the box for abnormalities

Twin plate clutches chatter, and 99% of them are un-damped and sit on none stock, un-damped flywheels, which cause gear train chatter and rattle. The stuff about roller bearings is total and utter bull... I know about 6 people in the UK I'd trust to rebuild that box, and I'm one of them :) It may be there was nothing up with it before. Did you get the old damaged bits and bearings et cetera?

No unfortunetely i didnt Chris. The gearbox was buggered before because third gear was crunching. It got fixed and then the chattering started.

I think i do have a twin plate clutch in it but not 100%...

If the chattering is the gearbox, would you know what it is???

surely you should be able to tell if you have an uprated clutch ?? is it light/heavy ??

you can easy see by inspection plate too..

If it's a twin plate clutch and none stock flywheel the box WILL chatter. Period. If it should be an internal fault it's a weird one, as it's not a typical gearbox noise. layshaft bearing wear MIGHT cause it. I'll bet it's fine though, and it's the clutch assembly and flywheel combination. I'd live with it and see what happens :)
