DamanC
Just as a follow up, this is what the chick looks like as of this evening. He's imprinted, thinks I am his dad, follows like a dog, lets me pick him up, will sort of sit on command, and loves being hand fed and playing chase games. Bit of a difference, huh? http://www.chriswilson.tv/boris/emu.jpg
AndrewOW
That's just great news! Yeah, the peacocks do look nice too
Chris Wilson
I want a peacock!!! I can sell you one! Do your neighbours like NOISE though? They have only just stopped calling, the mating (and thus calling season) lasts from late may or early June to mid August. The noise can be heard half a mile away. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eWTABEOFYoY&feature=related
Supragal
I don't have room for one here I need to wait for my next place but I know where to go to get one now! I don't know much about them, do you need more than 1? Do they need enclosures etc? I don't dare start researching it properly else I'll end up with one!! I'll try and find a site with decent info, if not I'll draft something out. Ours used to fly free, but the next door but one neighbour moaned about them doing their business on his drive. I built them a big aviary so they could still fly and have space (that's a story in itself). You are better with a pair or trio, but plenty of people keep a solitary bird. Commonest are Indian Blues (the ones in the pic are Indian Blues. Java Greens look stunning, but are often a bit aggressive, and they are costly to buy (250 or so a bird, maybe more these days). All sorts of other colours are in existence, from an almost black (spectacular) to pure white. I have an Indian Blue hen bird sat on eggs right now... The male is a peacock, the female a peahen. The females like most birds, are quite drab, only the males have the plumage people expect. The tail feathers are only present in the mating season, they have all but moulted them now. They are easy to keep, fairly easy to breed, and are very hardy. I'd start with smaller pheasants if space is a problem. The peaowl are the largest of the pheasant family. Oh wow that white one is amazing! I take it you can mix breeds i.e. keep different breeds in 1 enclosure? I definately can't have any here but I do think they are awesome. There is a place I drive past sometimes that have a few, they roam free and seem to stay around their home with no problems.
tbourner
There are some at Stansted House relatively near to us, we can hear them from our back door!! Along with the sheep in a nearby field and some other odd noises from the local country park! Very nice to hear that kind of thing.
Chris Wilson
Our pair of kookaburras make a hell of a racket, but people always smile as it's such a "nice" noise. Peafowl have been described as sounding like a woman being tortured. http://www.chriswilson.tv/kookaburra.mp3
