RedM
YAY! My first post on a new OS. Needs some fine-tuning but works. I got a bit fed up when my PC crashed 3 minutes before the first attempt at downloading the Ubuntu image finished! ...and now, bed. But before I go, one word. Brown! Congrats So did you go with Ubuntu in the end then? It is rather brown by default isn't it! Nothing that can't be quickly sorted out though, you can spend ages trying out different window decorations and themes. My Laptop has just finished installing all the updates so I'm about restart and see if everything works. Stick with it
RedM
I did go with Ubuntu. Having convinced the other half that it was secure (quick trip to Shields Up!) and showed her the Ubuntu docs on security we decided that, initially, we'll have Ubuntu running on a separate HDD with access to the old XP drive. Once we (and by we I mean me) have got everything working (printer, camera etc) then we will run the two systems side by side for a bit and then decide whether to bin XP. I'll also be installing Ubuntu on my laptop this weekend. Although all this is theoretical if I can't find anywhere that sells IDE drives! carl0s
I don't like the brown. I much prefer Fedora's "clearlooks" theme which is blue. I also use the Gartoon icon set. These are all downloadable from http://art.gnome.org All this is changeable through System -> Preferences -> Look & Feel -> Appearance. If you click the Install button there, you can give it an Icon theme-part, or Window borders theme-part, or a whole theme. If you just give it an icon set, you you would click Customise to customise one of the existing themes and just change the icons. Clearlooks: http://art.gnome.org/themes/metacity/1009 Gartoon Icons: http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/1001 Quick screenshot: http://www.css-networks.com/Desktop.jpg
Thorin
....aaaand I'm back. The update really b0rked my nvidia drivers and as I didn't really know what I'm doing with xorg.conf it took me ages to get the two external monitors working properly when I plugged the laptop into the docking station. Sorted now though, a few nice improvements over Gutsy but nothing major... I'm waiting for KDE 4.1 to come out before upgrading that. Pete
I have an EeePC here which I've been asked to upgrade to the latest OpenOffice. It's a hateful little POS with bugger all disk space. Starting to wind me up now. At least it's Debian based.
RedM
How do you add icons to the desktop. I kind of miss the clutter!
carl0s
How do you add icons to the desktop. I kind of miss the clutter! either save things there.. or find something in the menu and right-click -> add launcher to desktop
Jake
Ewwww! I installed Kunbuntu with KDE4 but I really don't like the Fisher Price style UI. Back to Unbuntu I think.
RedM
either save things there.. or find something in the menu and right-click -> add launcher to desktop Right click seems to do nothing. Can I get a 'My Computer' type icon on there?
carl0s
Fedora already has them showing, but Google just turned up this: Show the Computer, Home, and Trash desktop icons in GNOME * Open the Configuration Editor, by running the program gconf-editor (ALT-F2 -> gconf-editor). * Choose apps->nautilus->desktop. * Tick the box beside computer_icon_visible, home_icon_visible, and trash_icon_visible. The changes take effect immediately. See here: https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/desktop-tips.html
RedM
Found that about ten minutes before you posted but thanks though. Now trying to get Compiz to run so I can get a cool Apple dock thing going on.
Thorin
Ewwww! I installed Kunbuntu with KDE4 but I really don't like the Fisher Price style UI. Back to Unbuntu I think. Yeah still loads of stuff missing and lots of changes still to be made with plasma yet. It's all to basic looking for my liking, I'm sticking with KDE 3.5.9 until 4.1 is out... I think Gnome is too Fisher Price style personally!
Wez
I have always found KDE a bit fisher price so Gnome for me. Anyone else here like ETerm?

carl0s
I have always found KDE a bit fisher price so Gnome for me. Anyone else here like ETerm? Is that eTerm as in the terminal emulator from the enlightenment window manager of ages ago? I remember first using e and it looked super but was pretty slow on my hardware at the time (Pentium-II 266 or something). Other than that a terminal has always just been a terminal to me.. xterm, eterm, rxvt, gnome-terminal.. I don't do anything advanced enough to notice any differences. I think eterm might have been one of the first ones to let you use a bitmap as a background to give the effect of translucent windows or something. I just tried out the Lego StarWars demo and was really surprised to see it runs almost 100% under WINE. They have really done wonders with the DirectX -> OpenGL wrapper whatsit. I'm hoping an Ubuntu 8.04 book for idiots comes out soon because I'm not picking up how a Linux system works! Repositories, sudo, command lines etc. It's all a bit strange. The server is irc.freenode.net which will already be filled in, then just "/join #ubuntu" You will need to register with nickserv first though.. something like "/msg nickserv help" should get you started, but ISTR it's "/msg nickserv register mypassword" and as long as nobody else has the nickname you've chosen, that'll be your nick for ever. When you go back on you have to "/msg nickserv identify mypassword" to identify yourself. The above is all necessary because most of the channels have channel modes set to not allow unregistered/identified users to speak.

I've been struggling with the 3d desktop. Apparently it's enable by default bu I can't seem to get it working. Also, Ubuntu failed to spot that I needed proprietary drivers for my GFX card although this is sorted now. I'm just a bit confused with all the various little bits that need downloading and installing just to get something else to work.
