Just watching the news re zimbabwe and seeing the civil unrest and the damage that is being done by Mugabe....

Strange how the joint forces, UK and US aren't bothering to invade and instill democracy like they have in the Middle East....

Bit of a rant....

No oil discovered yet ;)

Odd that isn't it :p Democracy/Capitalism isn't as important in a resource-poor country apparently.

Craziest thing for me is the inflation rate, it's something like 140,000%, you literally need a wheelbarrowload of money to buy bread from a shop.

Yeah, it is crazy, having been there before this huge market crash it is odd seeing it.

But neither are their African neighbours. The whole situation has the capcity to really unsettle the axis of peace in that region of Africa, which is now considered to be the most peaceful and powerful on the continent, yet they all seem to be wringing their hands of responsibility by allowing Mugabe to continue, and placing the onus on the MDC to back down, rather than stand and fight for the democratic rights of the people. If there isn't the will in their own backyard to sort it out, then it's unlikely anyone else will.

Wasn't it originally one of the richest African countries. The only reason why the country is poor now is because it is being killed by economic collapse (made 100 times worse by embargos).

I thought the whole point is that rarther than invading (and having all the left wing moaning like usual) the governments thought that they would try do it through democratic means this time.

Seems to me people moan when the UK and US do something, and moan when they don't.

Wait till they find that BIG diamond mine, things will change :D

Appauling really.....

South Africa has its own issues to sort out, highest murder rate in the world, corruption, illegal arms dealer and fraudster (not to mention an idiot) becoming president. All signs that Zims and SA need HELP:Pling:

We, (the British government), were very chummy with Mugabe at one time, as we were with Amin and S. Hussein. Personally I think someone who calls some of our politicians what he did has to be treated with some tolerance :) It's 90% tribal stuff over there anyway, and 90% of the west neither understands it or really cares. Problem is it spills onto OUR streets as immigration from these more exotic lands increases. We (our esteemed troops) are very unlikely to be sent there, despite what nightmares our fellow countrymen receive under his regime.

Troops, I would be happy with someone telling him to "pull his finger" but the US and UK are only interested in countries with natural resources.

Or just send one troop, with a high powered riffle....

Sorry to bring up an old post but i have started to think the exact same now with whats happened.

How can they invade Iraq for a dictator and murderer of a leader but not do the same here?

Just goes to show they dont actually give a damn, they only care about precious oil.

there are extra reasons they don't get involved;

- no chance of a nuclear threat from there (not that one existed in iraq but there was a chance)

- it is much further away from us so no threat at all,

- it will not affect trade routes, which the middle east does,

- it has no western money invested in it at all.

finally don't think everyone in the country wants rid of him, he is much respected for being a strong leader both in zimbabwe and in the neighbouring states.

Iraq is hardly pumping out a billion barrels a day. Iraq was settling an old score and a bullshit war. With Afgansistan still going on and possibly both Iran and N.Korea both sabre rattling would you if you were PM commit any more troops, money and resources to a dustbowl in southern Africa when it's own neighbours couldn't give a sh*t about that country?

You cannot force those people into democratic way of thinking. It will not work in Africa and it will not work at Middle East. Whatever you will think or say, those guys have mentality of dark ages, they need some tyrant or despot to keep weapon or whip over their head, so they function properly, otherwise they just seems to be lost and stop doing anything. There will be always fights over power, but here fight is done in offices, there tribes fighting on streets.

Ill informed caller faces GG, only one conclusion was ever going to be reached. Sadly GG presents only one side of his (very opinionated and incomplete) view yet again, and again.... etc

Imi, you're a good chap IRL but your views are rather shaded and you're as much a merchant for one sided media as the Mirror readers are :D Which side is correct? Who knows? Both are likely to be wrong (there's a scientific law that governs that but I can't recall it now).

Both sides are the problem.

We here in the UK seriously need to put our own house in order before committing anything to any foreign issues. We have made enough mistakes with foreign policy to the sad cost of our brave under-appreciated armed forces at the hands of what equates to bean counters and public relations spin doctors. The world is hating us along with our compatriots. We have all as societies (countries/governments/religions/sects etc) made mistakes, but the base point is our governments keep f*cking up and we the people that reap the whirlwind seem powerless to put them straight about how we all feel!? Aren't the government supposed to answer to the people in western society? How did this happen? Governments put a humanitarian/global economy/environmental/imminent terrorist spin on every action they perform, but it is a thinly veiled set of excuses to cover economical and political agenda that I for one am unsure is as altruistic or even benign as they imply.

Been chatting to my dad about our visits to Zimbabwe, and to put the inflation stupidness into perspective.

When I was there last in 98, I bought a drink at the hotel pool and I paid $10Zim for a rum and lemonade.. (The exchange rate the time was roughly £1 = $2.5Zim)

I've just used the currency converter on the net and the same drink today would cost me....
