Disk imaging software (e.g. Ghost)

What do you use for hard disk / partition imaging? I've used Ghost in the past but my copy of it (2002 edition I think) won't work with Vista without a hack. Whilst I'm not averse to hacking, when you're trying to recover all your work by restoring an image is not the time to do it! :)

So, are there any good freeware alternatives that people have come across?

How about the newer versions of ghost :search:

That's certainly an option. I've found Ghost (2002 and earlier) to be easy to use and fairly stable, but I get the impression that Norton/Symantec products are getting more and more "bloaty" and overly complex as time goes on. They used to produce some cracking tools a few years ago, but I've not heard good things recently.

Knoppix sounds like a possible: have you ever had to restore a disk image using it?

Many times yes. Latest version of Knoppix has the Partimage app I believe (http://www.partimage.org/) but I've always just used dd or ntfsclone from the command line (http://www.tipsfor.us/2007/06/05/ghost-your-windows-system-for-free-using-open-source-tools/3/).

It would appear that one caveat is that if you're wanting to restore a vista image to a different partition you need to edit the BCD boot file before cloning, or something like that, quick google found this http://www.multibooters.co.uk/cloning.html but I've never used Vista so I don't know.
