Does the dvd have a built in amp with all your speakers connected? or do you have a stand alone AV amp?

Either way then PS3 optical out goes into amp as long as its got optical inputs and not coaxial. This will give you surround sound out the PS3.

For the TV you will need to check what audio outputs it has, (assuming it has an optical port on it then maybe its just an input to the tv) sometimes they're just composite L&R outs or white & Red RCA plugs but can still be connected to the amp and sound fine. Might need a scart adapter cable.

All depends on the input ports available on the thing thats processing the surround.

If the DVD player, speakers and sub all came together, (ie as 1 boxed product) then just plug it all in as the manual describes. Usually this means the DVD/amp are 1 unit, then speakers and sub all connect into the labelled sockets on the back.

Then, the optical out from the TV can be plugged straight into the optical input on the back of the amplifier, and then you change the input with the remote control to the input you've just connected, and sound should come out.

Are you sure you're selecting the right audio input on the DVD player?

I use optical out from my PS3 to my DVD as it has Dolby 5.1 surround and TBH, it's excellent. I generally use the PS3 as my DVD player now too as it upscales - my DVD home theatre system really only gets used as an audio amp nowadays.
