JustGav
I've got a few DVDs which have been converted from VHS to DVD, quality isn't great, (typical training vids really), and ideally I want to shed the DVDs and simply have avi's. Given the original source was VHS I can really push the size down. Used to use DVDx in the past, was just wondering if there is anything else out there worth looking at. I do have coreavc so not adverse to H264 either. Any suggestions for opensource/free conversion proggies?
DamanC
Im sure I used dvd to avi once upon a time, althou I think they start to charge tmpGENC is another goodie, althou is probably ott for what your wanting to do. Nero has a nice basic one built in, again I dont think they are free. Divx is probably your best bet

Trying the one out below and will post results http://sourceforge.net/projects/megui I don't use anything else now, plenty of help and info over on the doom9 forums. Installed and under evaluation Thanks for that... EDIT : Selfupdating as well... I like that Any particular recommended settings for a VHS source? Thorin
Depends what you're going to be playing the videos back on I suppose, just a PC? Probably just the fastest 2-pass H264 preset in that case.
JustGav
MeGUI seems to crash on my laptop, will have to try it at home... bit funny with the configs and all that but I suppose once it is configured once I can fire all 6 of the training dvd's through it. It does require .NET 2.0 but that's it I think.
