DVD Conversion..

Recommended Posts

I've got a few DVDs which have been converted from VHS to DVD, quality isn't great, (typical training vids really), and ideally I want to shed the DVDs and simply have avi's. Given the original source was VHS I can really push the size down. Used to use DVDx in the past, was just wondering if there is anything else out there worth looking at.

I do have coreavc so not adverse to H264 either.

Any suggestions for opensource/free conversion proggies?

Im sure I used dvd to avi once upon a time, althou I think they start to charge :(

tmpGENC is another goodie, althou is probably ott for what your wanting to do. Nero has a nice basic one built in, again I dont think they are free.

Divx is probably your best bet :)

dvd2avi never worked for me, tmpgenc was always a good fav BUT don't think it will do h264 stuff which I'm edging over towards being my common media format at home. Trying the one out below and will post results :)

http://sourceforge.net/projects/megui

I don't use anything else now, plenty of help and info over on the doom9 forums.

Installed and under evaluation :) Thanks for that...

EDIT : Selfupdating as well... I like that

Any particular recommended settings for a VHS source?

MeGUI seems to crash on my laptop, will have to try it at home... bit funny with the configs and all that but I suppose once it is configured once I can fire all 6 of the training dvd's through it.

It does require .NET 2.0 but that's it I think.

If your using a mac try "VisualHub".. had to buy it though (but was only $10, so about a fiver..)

Is really good, will convert anything to Itunes, psp, dv,dvd, avi, mp4, wmv, mpeg, flash.. etc etc..

all with advanced setting inc h.264..
