i've been having problems with my car just cutting its power midway through driving. car is a MKIV Toyota Supra TT Auto J-spec, with no mods. and i have recently got a new alarm installed too, so maybe that has something to do with it.

What Happened:

Battery terminals where stuffed and loose and came undone whilst I was driving, making the car run off the alternator for about 15minutes, how I noticed the car was running off alternator was the lights would dim and go bright by themselves and that’s when the problems started.

Point to note:

This happened before the new alarm got installed.

Symptoms:

- Driving along and after a bit the car would idle out and die; I then would lose all power to the car. Then I would turn the car over straight away and it would start and idle out and die again.

Fix:

- Changed Battery terminals (Which seemed to fix the problem)

After new alarm got installed:

After the new alarm got installed on a Sunday, the following Tuesday after it had driven to work fine, later on I started it up and noticed all the warning lights stayed on whilst I was driving, then it started idle low and eventually idled out again, but this time as it was idling out and the car still in motion, the alarm was going off and sounding flat. I was told when the battery is low on charge or flat, the immobiliser will cut in on back up battery because it thinks that car is off due to the low voltage.

Symptoms:

- Driving along and after a bit the car would idle out and die, the alarm would go off and all the dash lights would stay on and be very dim.

Fix:

- New battery (which made it start find But all the dash lights would still stay on and they were nice and bright)

Possible Problems:

- Alternator?

- Failing diode?

- Voltage output?

- Battery?

- Fuses?

- Bad earth from new Alarm?

And for reference the new alarm system is a “Python 902”

any help would be great.

You changed the battery and now it's not cutting out? So the current problem is just that your dash lights are staying on?

Are there any fault codes stored?

Once, i was getting ready to drive off on a green light and my engine stopped like i was releasing the clutch too early , than after starting the engine for the third time i realized it was dead, i pushed the gas pedal to the floor consecutively and it was just idling than all of a sudden it revived itself and never had the problem again and i'm 100% sure it was from the alarm system because it started acting strange just before.

It sounds very likely that the diode pack in the alternator is stuffed. Had this on 2 cars now, cheapest fix is a good used unit, but you CAN get diode and regulator packs to repair yours, from Toyota. I'd replace the 2 bearings in it, whilst it's apart, if you choose the rebuild route. Happens when there is a short or the battery is knackered / disconnected and the alternator overloaded. Also check the earth route to the alternator and the wiring and terminals to it. HTH.

cheers for the replys. I put a multimeter on the new battery without the car going and its showing 12.2volts which is what its suppose to be, meaning the battery is ok (As it bloody should be coz its Brand new) lol. so then i checked if the alternator was charging, so i turned the car on and checked it battery again, now i was told if the alternaotr is charging it will be on about 14.2v or more. but mine was on 10.6 to 11V which mean yeah my alternator/Voltage regulator is rooted. so iam going to get an auto leck to have a look at it to today and see if that is all.
