A veteran driver who had not had an accident in 76 years but caused £60,000 worth of damage to two Porsche cars has spoken of his "miracle" escape.

Jack Higgs, 93, was uninjured when his Ford Fiesta hit a Carrera II then flipped over onto a Porsche 911 outside a showroom in Penarth, near Cardiff.

Glad he's decided not to risk getting behind the wheel again! I'm sure the article would've been written in a very different tone if he'd hit two people instead of two cars......

True but how many points do you have on your licence and how long have you been driving? I’ve been driving 6 years and already have 3 points... He’s done well for the past 70 years etc.

Very true. Had my Licence 20 years this August and never any points. (Touch Wood) :D

Wish more older people had the sense to give up driving when they become a hazard to others (Not that he did as such.)

None, and 8 years. :) I'm not saying the guy is evil and should be burned at the stake, I'm pointing out that if he'd done exactly the same thing but with a different result, the 'we-must-ban-all-over-70's-immediately' brigade would be in full swing! Rather than a lighthearted 'look at this poor fella' article.

Would of like'd to of seen just how he managed that

Yeah, hard to imagine. Can only assume he slowly reversed and somehow hit the Throttle with some force by accident thus making him fly backward onto the bonnet of the first Porsche and flip him over??

if he was reversing he must have been going some speed to flip, it looks like he hit one car and flipped onto the other.

Exactly right, I've heard a few stories about OAP's wildly crashing into things by stamping on the 'wrong pedal', then clinging onto the steering wheel for dear life, and forgetting to lift off...

I'll admit, my licence has been much more decorated than yours, or his, but the points are irrelevant IMO, up until a few years ago, (Well up until 2000), you'd have to do something REALLY silly to get points, nowadays they dish them out like breakfast...

If he really hasn't hit anything in his time, then fair play, but the fact he doesn't have anything recorded doesn't make him great, I don't have a claim against me, nor have I ever made a claim... But I have crashed... Know what I mean?...

How much was the insurance on those 49 points?... And what were you able to drive? (Just interested)

Yes a very fair point.

I was just trying to pre empt the usual 'we-must-ban-all-over-70's-immediately' brigade too by showing his excellent record compared to ours (mine) :D

My grandad had held a clean license for years but towards the end he REALLY couldnt drive!

Yes mine had the same problem.... had something to do with not having had his eyes checked in 30 years! (oh and he got his licence driving tanks in the war!)

Not at all from me, I abhor bans, but do support testing of people when they might not be able to drive...

(And yes, I know I'm likely to fail 1st time)
