Buying cars from disabled people

Just a quick one, might be well known to you but it was new to me...

If you buy a car from a disabled person ignore what they tell you about it being taxed if they are actually registered disabled.

I bought a 106 diesel on Sunday, taxed until July - checked the V5C and noticed the car is in taxation class "Disabled", checked the tax disc more carefully and noticed "Disabled" on there too.

So when sending back was going to change this to PLG - called to check about this as it says you need to go to the local office to sort it. The reason for this is that as soon as the disabled person sells a car in that class it's effectively untaxed, they want you in the office to buy new tax with your MOT, insurance cert etc.

So I have a car that I shouldn't be driving because they don't consider it to be taxed, even though it has a tax disc that's "valid" until July. Slightly annoying.

Anyway I think I might have sold it already so it's not a big issue, just a bit lame and something to look for when buying a used car in future.

I got screwed like this a couple of year's back buying an old J plate BMW from a disabled woman.

The car had just been taxed that day, two weeks later I got a letter through from the dvla saying that the cheque used to pay for the tax had bounced and could I please send it back?

Bummer, that's a pain... Another way for the Govt to get cash out of the motorist (Although I guess they did give it free to the disabled person)

It's also worth noting that with a car registered as disabled, no-one else can drive it unless they're disabled themselves (Regardless of their insurance (Although I don't know about Trade)(Just called my Dad to check as I drive his now and again, but he pays for his tax so myself and Mum can use it)

Sorry I should have mentioned that, disabled people (no idea if it's all of them) get free tax.

That's interesting to know, so in summary we need to keep a close eye on disabled folks :)

Well thats strange, never heard that before.

My mum is registered disabled and has never had a driving license. She has a new disability car every 3 years and my dad drives it and i am also on the insurance to drive it (incase anything happened to my dad so i can drive my mum about) and its all done through the disability section at the car dealership.

Some friends of ours also have a disability car, have done for years, its the man thats disabled but his wife drives the car, he never goes in it, so she's an able bodied driver getting away without paying road tax. :eyebrows:

But putting that aside, it grieves me why they dont have to pay road tax. They are driving on the road like every fecker else. :eyebrows:

Yeah I got caught by this too with an old 5 series estate, really irritating as you have to go to your 'local' DVLA office and change the vehicle details.

That's the worst bit really - those places are like the immigration office but busier. They can't even do the V5 there and then either, just the tax, the post office could do that surely?

I guess that's a Motability car they have? If that is the case (As they get a new one every 3 years) - I'd assume, you and your Dad are named on the policy...

My Dad bought his own car, and doesn't have Motability, I'd assume that's the difference?...

Another word of advice is, don't buy a car of an old person also!

I saw one of my elderly neighbours friends try to burn out the clutch going up my street at the weekend. The elderly lady on drove 30 yards but could smell the burning for around an hour. Poor Nissan Micra.....

yeh if the cars classed as disabled then they have to take the tax out before they sell it. then you have to take the v5 to your local dvla centre and they can re-tax it for you there and then and they send the v5 to swansea to get re-classed again.....ball ache;)
