Angarak
Would anyone know of a company within the UK who are able to CNC an engine block out of aluminium as shown in the following video: ? Cheers Simon
JamieP
What do you want it for?
Angarak
My mate needs a company to machine an aluminium engine block for a certain car due to lack of availability. There is a company in the US who can do it - but he'd prefer to get it done in the UK.
bromy
Have they any idea how much that would cost?
b_have
Yes, the CNC company I use (manufacture our billet heads) can do it. Would you want liners or nicosil bores? (btw, the cost may be more than you imagine)
Angarak
b'have: Yes he would want liners. The US company he knows of does V8 engine blocks with liners ready to go for $6500...but they are too busy to do some for him. Another company in the US quoted $20-$30k for the program alone and a 18 month wait! The main stumbling block seems to be the generation of the program. As far as he knows, he can have his current engine block laser scanned and then some CAD work to finish it off internaly I think. He has been quoted £9000 for this alone. Idealy he would want to retain ownership of the program(s) and have a first one to test then a batch of maybe 5 blocks.
Swampy442
Just a thought, but does it have to be billet? Couldnt he get a copy sand cast and machine finished?
Angarak
Possibly, but I dont think he wants to go down the cast block route if possible.
steb9780
There's some time gone into that. It would take me a while with my Psion, calculator, pencil and paper

Ok, will mention to him later in the week,He has no lazer scanning equipment, but does a lot of cad/cam for Satalite builds.
Angarak
Cheers If it is something they can do, could you PM some contact info and I'll pass them onto my mate so he can have a natter with them. ...It would take me a while with my Psion, calculator, pencil and paper
Chris Wilson
Loads of companies here could do it, the cost of a one off will be horrendous though, maybe more than having a casting done and machining that.
TLicense
I could possibly scan and cad him the block. What's his time schedule like?
razza
That's some serious money for an engine:blink:
Angarak
Chris: Im sure it would cost quite a bit more than a cast block but it hasnt put them off the idea. At the moment they're trying to get a rough price for such work and estimated turn around, etc. Tony: His time schedule is pretty relaxed I think. Would it be possible for me to give my mate your contact info (email or tel - whichever you prefer) and have them contact you as they know more about it than myself?
