Stock air box filter options?

I have put the stock air box back in due to the hot temperatures causing too much low rpm lag. I forgot how quiet the car was!!

 

I know some of you guys run the stock box all the time but with an alternative panel filter.

How do these compare with the stock filter for performance and filtration?

 

Any details would be appreciated.:thumbs:

Personally I think stock paper element is fine, but I have a TRD one I took off a sale car, looks pretty much as new, if you want to try it I'll take 15 quid for it, plus postage.

I have left the stock panel filter on but I have taken off the cover box to allow more air when it needs it. It seems to work pretty well as I can hear an induction noise when air is being pulled in. There is a better pickup at lower revs but I would say not as much as a proper induction filter.

 

What I have been thinking about is to open up the air channels that bring air into the airbox area. They look pretty constricted in stock form. I've no idea as yet what I'm going to do but if anyone comes up with some ideas I will be listening.

It is now pulling in hot engine bay air, as opposed to the cold air from outside the bay as Toyota designed. All this talk of kits is fine, but do you need one, will it make a gain? My tests with a manometer on the engine side of the stock filter box and filter suggest even at 18 psi boost, no cats the stock box and filter present no significant restriction whatsoever. The rolling road I use has also failed to show any gain at all from running 2 different after market filter kits (HKS and Apexi). I personally feel the stock filter is best, it is designed to pull cold air, it's quiet, and it actually filters properly, IMO some of the aftermarket filters are a joke as to filtering efficacy.

Taken heed of your advice Paul and I've put my airbox cover back on, but I still think I've lost a slight bit of initial grunt as I put my foot to the floor. It may be that it's all in my head as it is not all that noticable.

I definatley noticed a difference when I took the cover off.... may be there's a difference when it's cold temperature outside as opposed to the hot/warm weather we've had recently?

 

Is there any other way to bring cold outside air into the airbox area without having to take off the front right headlight unit? I've thought about trying to open up air channels but the plastic is realy tough.

Anyway,

 

If you get an FMIC you could drill down and suck air up from the drivers side air duct.

 

But the best way would be through a NACA duct ported directly in to the box - that would require you to cut the bonnet and therefore respray it...might be worth doing some more "mods" to the bonnet at the same time.

There already is a hole in the bottom of the stock air box that draws air in from the drivers side bumper vent. It just needs a little ducting to divert the air up there to get a better flow, you dont need to drill anything.

Hmmmm..... I don't know where I got Paul from, I think I was reading another post at the time. I was supposed to say Chris as I was commenting on his previous post. I think the hot weather is getting to me. We all go insane at some point in our lives. Now I'm off to ride on my yellow elephant.
