Oil leaking through HKS BOV

Hi

before anyone asks i have done a search for this but not finding anything usefull. I have just had a recent engine rebuild approx 2200miles ago and since day 1 there has been oil leaking through the bov when this never happened before the rebuild.

There is smoke coming from the exhuast white mainly but when i drive you get blasts of blue smoke after i have just boosted or during boost. the oil coming out of the bov looks exactly the same amount as in the pics from this thread here

The company who done the rebuild said that this is normal and that the intercooler could be full of oil and needs draining? i checked the pipe from the turbos to the intercooler and this had oil in it so i pressume it is the seals? i dont know if hes trying to blag it as the turbos (hybrids) were fitted by him and are still under warrenty.

basically when ever i question this i get the feeling im bein blagged and i just wanted other peoples opinions as to what they think it is as i want to go down there and have some ammo under my belt type thing so i cant get blagged again! Whatever they do, if its not the fault they are going to charge me! eg take the turbos out to check and its not them there gonna charge me 6 hours labour and i still aint got a result!

just for info the mods i have are Full stainless decat exhaust (no ring) boost controller, induction kit, hybrids, fcd.

as i said any opinions would be great

I dunno, but back in the day, if you have oil leaking from the intake and your exhaust is spewing out white/blue smoke, it usually means broken piston rings. But you just have a rebuilt, so I dunno what to tell ya....

HI

Well Im no expert but blue smoke from exhaust is not normal; and a lot of oil from BOV tends to suggest turbo seals. In any case if youve paid em good money it should be done right. Tell em to sort it. My BOV emmits very small film of oil after vigorous driving which is normal I think.

Something is wrong m8

The dumpvalve is pre-intercooler, i know it hasnt been flushed after the rebuild. ive asked them to sort it as i have spend thousands with them but they dont seem to want to know, the replys i get are:-

if we take the turbos out and it aint the turbos we will charge you labour approx 6hrs or they will still charge me to drain the intercooler! (is it just the intercooler that needs draining or is it all the pipes aswell?) oh if it makes a difference the intercooler was fitted after the rebuild but while it was in for that job.

really feel for you there mate, my stock bov used to get covered in oil, my car has 90k miles and original turbos i get alot of oil in the intake pipes and am now going single before the feckers pack up completely, i have a hks bov on at the moment and dont get any oil coming from it so yours must be spewing it out, this is a symptom of turbo seals going there is no other place the oil could come from on that side of the intercooler, if the i/c were full of oil it could not get all the way back up up to the bov on the turbo side of the inlet, just think about which direction the air is flowing and it dont make sence, blue smoke from the exhaust is NOT NORMAL if your getting no where with these clowns get an independant automotive engineer to do a report on the engine this will cost but at least you willl know the score when you take em to court, hope you get this soughted

Cheers for the advice, after the rebuild i had a list of problems for which this company said was normal even though i insisted it wasnt. I went to TOYODATECH and they sorted most of the problems out at my expence on which they wrote a full report. In the report it states that its turbo seals gone, but as they didnt take anything apart to conclude this, the rebuild company have just brushed this report aside!

i spoke to them today and he is adament its oil in the intercooler! they said even though i have run the engine in for approx 2200miles it will take at least another 1000 before the oil sorts itself out!!!

B'ave P'md back ;)

why dont you take off the intercooler, and flush it through with some petrol then take it to the garage and show them it is not full of oil, dont know what your expierience is with car maintenance but to take off the i/c is a very straight forward job whether side or front mount (sorry if i'me teaching you to suck eggs here) it sounds like this garage is just puttin you off and have screwed up something bad

That's just plain bollocks! There is no way that the oil in the BOV can have come from the intercooler.

They're just stringing you along so that they can say you ran the car for X miles/months and the fault has developed out of warranty.

Document everything that you do, put your case to them in writing, back up every phone call or visit to them, with a letter reiterrating what both parties said, so there is no misunderstanding by either side, and if you can't get satisfaction within a reasonable time scale, take them to the small claims court. With an independant report and well documented evidence, it will be much more difficult for them to wriggle out of their liabilities.

its the same as the pictures in the first link

I just went hunting for this picture, only to find out it was mine... And my first post in this forum!

I'm 99% convinced that my oil 'river' was a result of overfilling. It was a good 1-2cm too high on the dipstick. Now it's back to the max level, I'm not seeing any more oil (other than the aforementioned light spray that one would expect from the BOV).

My garage reckoned the problem was the oil seal on turbo #2. However, I wasn't seeing any blue smoke which is why I was cynical. But you are seeing blue smoke, so that's a different story...

P.S. As asserted in my original thread, I know next-to-nothing about engines so feel free to ignore every comment I make.

Ive been to see Charlie (B'have) today, Top Bloke  i will be taking the car back to the garage on wed and demanding they look at the turbos. I have 3 seperate opinions from independant mechanics now, all have said that the turbos are to blame. just hope i get some where as small claims courts are lot of hasstle.
