Career change or advise.

I really want to get out of IT - I feel that I am stuck in a dead end career and really want a change and I need to think about my future, I have alot more commitments coming my way ie a morgage, I could look into going to uni but that would mean going from a monthly income which covers my bills to no money, I am currently paying off a loan ( 5 years to go) which was to consolidate debt i got into, so i really do need a income, I've looked at aprenterships however they offer 10 to 12k tops which i don't think i could live off I.e Bill's to pay and what not, however it may well be the route i will have to take.

I am one of these people who can be shown some thing once then I know what to do, but if I read it out of a text book I will have to read it over about 3 -5 times before it sinks in, so I've figured I want to do some thing quite practical with my hands, I would love to do Motor sport's and Engineering or race technician however from what I can find its all down south so i don't think I would be able to do it :( , If i didn't have any debt or commitments up here I would drop every thing just to get into some thing like that, Is there any career paths or advice you guys recommend, ideally i will need some thing which i can get funding for or is not going to cost 3k for a 3 month course.

Any ideas, or if any one on here has a business who wants some one to train up I am more then willing to hear from you!

Lew, you like your Muay Thai right?

Is there anyway you could get in to that professionally, as a coach for instance?

I've been teaching Self-defence (with Ving Tsun concepts) in Secondary Schools around London for just over 20 years now.

I could look at it but would require 2 more days training, doing interclubs building up into bigger fights, its hard to get paid to fight and allot of hard work and training, beside thoes thai boys are rock!.. only other route really if not going fot titles is looking at ufc and cage fighting and building up that way, still involves 6 days training, allot of dedication it wouldnt really pay the bills either :( maybe in about 5 years i could look at bigger titles, just inter clubs at the mo.

plumbing or gasman, practical stuff, however if you get an apprentiship then you will be low paid but at the end of it the money will come..

I did 6 months night course with lomax training to be a gas man, my dad is also doing it, finishes it this may then off to get registerd with corgie, the only reason i dropped out was because it the first year was completely paper work no practicle at all, which bored me so i drop out, i really regret it now though :( would have had a good future, could always go back but i dont think they would want to see my face again after ditching them.

I want to do some thing that i have a interest in, if i get into some thing i like then i will enjoy work, i dont want to turn 30 and regret not doing what i wanted, so if i make a change now i will never have to regret the things i didnt do.

I can't offer any advice on where you need to look, but I can sympathise for being in the same position... Sadly I'm pretty well paid for my job (And have virtually unlimited overtime for as long as I can stay awake), so I can't think of anything I'd get that would give as much cash...

Obviously I've thought about jobs that wouldn't pay as much for more job satisfaction, but I haven't thought of anything that would pay near my basic :(

What about IT on an international theme. There are a number of jobs available that would be right up your street and the pay would be circa 60K (tax free). The only downside is that you would have to work in some rather unpleasant locations:rolleyes:

At the end of the day, it may not be your trade/skill base that is the problem but your location and the potential to move upwards (or lack of it)

try getting out of the uk like me.... then you won't have to pay all the high level of taxation which is ruining the lives of middle britain.

Or just do what a lot of people are doing these days..... as the welfare state is so very generous and does not really care if you work or want to work.... just live off the state.

I've found some thing i want to do however it is a apprenticeship but looks very interesting, Just reading about it has me wanting to do it!

Race Technician Apprenticeship

http://www.tresham.ac.uk/nc4m

I have spoken to the collage and they have advised me on what to do, firstly I need to find a race team willing to take on a apprentice however they must match the Corse content, The pay will be low but if i can source another income as well I should be ok, only problem now is where do I start, I need to find a race team that is a professional team not just any old weekend cart trackers, the advisor recommends that i do F3, Rally or Touring car, drift maybe but they have to match the course requirements.

Can anyone advise me where would be best to try and get into up here in the northeast?

also i have been recommended to try do free weekend work with race teams which i will be willing to do.

It doesn't work as easy as that... I've been doing my college Motorsport thing as well, but purely for educational reasons. Race teams aren't going to take someone fresh out of college and drop you into a touring car team..sorry but that is just the way it is. You have to get in at the bottom and work your way up OR have a hell of an experience history.

Might not be the answer you were looking for, but unless you have got a contact, chances are slim.

well yeah its totally true, I think what the advisor meant and what i meant to say is you need to find a big team because a back street garage wont be able to afford a apprentice and wont be able to offer the training, but yeah i get what your saying.

Re-reading what I wrote, it was a little negative... the one thing I will say, start sending out letters now, get yourself a shed load of stamps and don't get disheartened. I remember when I was at BMW the amount of letters coming into Motorsport was huge...Needless to say not very many even got opened (I got in via a friend..old boy network)

Hi Lew only just seen your reply.

I see what you're saying as a competitor, but I meant as an instructor. It pays my bills :)
