Arch rolling - Arch Enemy?

Right, just got back to work after having my arches rolled. I have 3 things to say:

1) They did a VERY good job

2) Sod doing it yourself unless you've got some unwanted cars to practice on for a few months

3) I really need to make sure my camera is charged before using it.

So the guy came along to do my arches. He arrived in a very clean looking Lexus and got straight to work. He'd already told me that he needs a power point 25m or less from the car to enable use of his tools so I arranged the location.

After jacking the car up and putting it on axel stands he got the wheels off and inspected the arches. He stated it would be no problem at all, and I could even fit some 10-15mm spacers in there after he's done  (bearing in mind my new 275 tyres were catching on the arch quite a lot, over most bumps in the road).

The first thing he does is bolt his rolling tool onto the hub and then he heats up the area to be rolled with a heatgun. Then he proceeds to roll the tool backwards and forwards tightening it onto the car as he goes. This has the effect of levering the arch outwards and pushing the lip of the arch back over itself in a tidy manner.

Once he is happy that the arch is clear he seals the work he's just done with sealant and then goes onto the next arch.

He managed to get it finished within 35 mins!! That's for the 2 rear arches. I was pretty impressed and he did say that was a record for him. I guess it's down to the Supra being such a good car ;)

I paid £75 plus £25 petrol as I'm officially out of his "area" but he did say he'd go pretty much anywhere in the South and there are agents for the Midlands, North and Scotland as well.

So to conclude I highly recommend this service to anyone whose wheels are catching on the arch.

I didn't get any pics due to the aforementioned camera screw-up but you're welcome to come and have a look at his work at any shows, trackdays, Supra meets or random get togethers that I attend this summer.

Sure. Very very subtle roll and flare considering how much extra room I've got. I only had the rears done. Now running 17x9 et-3 on the rear with 225/45 tyres, with loads of room to go lower

This is him at work......

So they just rolled the inside of your arch then Gaz, I guess its when the're flared that they take off that flat edge on the wheel arch that I dont like, think it looks much better without......

Yeah that's it. He said I'd need spacers to flare the arch as his tool didn't go far enough out. I didn't want it flared anyway. I don't want the whole "widearch with little wheels" look ;) as I think that looks worse! Besides, I think the Supras lines are pretty perfect as they are. The flatness compliments the flat face of the wheel IMO.

The nightmare starts if you need a new rear 1/4 panel, as the lip with the spot welds is now rolled up flush with the wheel arch liner. Isn't it easier just to buy wheels and tyres that fit? :)

Thats too simple Chris ;)

Speaking of which, you remembe when you done my car, I said that after you the car was going to GVN to have the rear arches rolled to also aid in more room, well after that has now been done I have a lot more clearence. You said you fitted the hardest springs available to you to help reduce the risk of further rubbing, thing is Im sure I have clearence spare now, and as that is the case I was wondering if I can soften up my ride a bit as its pretty hard on crap roads on the those springs.

Could you give me a guestimate on a set of softer springs. Also I have constantly had a creaking from the front right since you dont the work, ToyotaGT said it might be the top mount but they havent had the car yet to have a proper look. Also what make of springs would you have used as they asked but Im not aware, they were red if that helps ?

Sorry for the hi-jack Gaz, but well, its only you lol ;)

Does the sealant go inbetween the bodywork and the lip he has just rolled upto the bodywork ?

What is the sealant for ?

It's anti-corrosion sealant and he coats the whole "lip" after it's been rolled up towards the arch.

I'm not planning on stuffing it into armco but if I do i'll report back. :)

The wheels and tyres did fit perfectly, until I found some R888s that were 10mm wider. They don't stock the R888s in 265. I'll be getting the geometry sorted to match.

It's not too simple, it's far to expensive and long-winded when I can just pay £100 and get the arches sorted. At the end of the day if I crash it then the likelyhood is that i'll need plenty more than just a rear quarter anyway so that problem is negligable IMO.

And Ash - careful, you might start taking me for granted until you line up next to me at the lights ;)

You gonna come to the 'Ring with us or not? We've got a space with your name on it

Good, it's a bad dirt spot already, making it into a V shape

Yeah my thoughts exactly! The guy is evidently very experienced though and did know exactly what he was doing. He does this full time and does all kinds of cars including Triumphs, BMW M3s, lots of Japanese stuff and pretty much anything. He said a few weeks back he did a mark 2 Escort van with a Cossy YB engine lol.
