Broadband and Phone supplier Question

Recommended Posts

After 5 years with Pipex I have decided it's time to move on and try to get someone more reliable and possibly safe some money.

I have a phone and Broadband package with them and it is costing me around £25 a month (Incl. Phone calls) at the moment.

I looked at Virgin Media last night but when I searched on here I found some rather damning reports on them especially regarding evening speeds. Since we normally only use the net from 4.30pm onwards till around midnight in the week (more at weekends) slow speeds at night are a no go.

We play a lot of Online games too so need something unlimited or with a large allowance.

Any suggestions appreciated. I am ADSL not Cabled by the way otherwise I would go with SKY.

If you want to keep a phone/broadband package (cheapest way) then you can't go far wrong with cable/Virgin.

Yes, sometimes your local connection might be affected by idiots running P2P 24/7, but that depends where you live.

I've had it for 6 years or so and have been very happy with the service and price.

For online games you're looking for low latency.

Look around on

(1): bbs.adslguide.org.uk

(2): DSLzone.

Sky is ADSL by the way?

Ay, that as maybe but when I put my Postcode in Sky tells me I can only have SKY connect at £16 a month rather then the full Phone, TV & Broadband package.

I was only really saying I am ADSL not Cable because someone may suggest a Cabled service to me which is no good as I live in the sticks, we ain't that advanced ere. ;)

Ah. Well I was on about Virgin Cable.

ADSL certainly has its quirks I'm afraid.

:( We pay the price of living where we live I guess. I am 1.98 miles away from my Exchange, don't suppose that helps much.

:search:

You are around 1.98 kilometres from your exchange (as the crow flies).

Virgin media all the way. You only need to worry about the slow down if you download mega amounts of info. For example i download and upload loads of stuff and the slowdown i get cuts me down to 4mb. 4mb is usually plenty for anyone to use so you shouldn't notice them throttling your downloads.

If you select the 3 for £30 or 4 for £40 you will get 2mb broadband. This is usually fast enough for most people other than those wanting to download a movie in 15 mins. For online gaming its plenty, 512kb was plenty afterall ;)

If you can only get ADSL, it'll be their Virgin.net service which you'll get, AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS...

People say one ADSL provider's the same as the rest, not the case I found out...

Apart from their shocking customer service, and lack of billing, and you can't change the DD date, their connection is terrible, rubbish speeds, they're too keen to throttle your connection (to a speed slower than dial-up), and many applications just won't work (My work VPN was useless)...

I've recently swopped to BT, ordered online and got the black phone and hub which I've got connected to my N1 router, and the improvement in everything has been great :)

I'm curious then, what possible use could you have for 8mb broadband? They do 2 for £20 too ;)

Unfortunately Be is not available in your area yet.

Yeah, reading your posts is what has put me off Virgin tbh.

I've got 5 PC's, a PSP, a wii and we both have N95's with wireless.

I never use over 2mb when not downloading from newsgroups or big torrents. There is no point in paying for something you don't need.

Up to you of course ;)

Yet I haven't heard to many good things about BT either and they are expensive no?

I can only say what I've experienced, and it has been good (Although I haven't had to phone them up about any issues yet, good as I've had no issues, bad as I don't know about their 'aftersales service')...

But for someone who works in IT (Not as much as some of you before you start ;) (But still experienced)) - They're worth the ££ so far, just pay the extra to get onto a 12 Month Account rather then the 18 Month one they push the normo's onto...
