Porsche 911 (964)

Well, the original 911 came out in 1963, so pretty close. But your theory wouldn't work with the 997, which was launched in 2004 :) How the numbering actually works is that every Porsche project, be it racing car or stillborn concept, is assigned a number, which is why you'll have a jump from 964 to 993 and why the Boxster has a lower number, 986 and 987 than 911s which were launched earlier, as it was in development for longer.

All Porsche odels start with a 9. The Boxsters are 986 & 987 and the 944 replacement was a 968. Usually named in order of development.

Bad Boys used a 964 Turbo S.

I'm torn between a 964 Turbo or a 996 Carrera.

Do you like the classic looks or the modern looks? If it is classic, then have a look at this:

A 964 Turbo will cost $$$$$.

The 996 is a bit too "safe" for my liking, and marked the end of the air-cooled systems.

Ideally, I'd like a 993GT2 or a 964 Turbo but I don't think they're worth the money they command.

So, my #1 choice would be a 993. The NA, not the Turbo (because the turbo was 4WD, I think).

I'm not keen on the classics.

I did think about buying a 1974 3.0 Turbo and saught a specalist to get advice from, his response "great we will set you up a camp bed in our store room!". Sort of made the decision for me :D

Have a look at the piston heads link, its classic styling on a 964 base!

996 (Carreras) £18-40k

993 (Carreras) £20-45k

993GT2 £90-130k

964 Turbo £20-35k
