If there is a problem with the ABS it is turned off completely by the ECU and the ABS warning light on the dash will be permanently illuminated.

Do your other warning lights work on the dash when you turn on the ignition? Might be worth doing a diagnostic test to see if the ECU has registered an ABS fault.

Right, from my experience, and that of quite a few others on this board, the printed circuit board that the bulb mounts onto for the right hand warning lights usually has a *LOT* of dry breaks.

Motor companies obviously have to make cars VERY idiot safe, and so if the ABS isn't working in any way the ABS light should come on. It should also come on for a few seconds when you first start the car.

Certainly mine didn't and it was because of all the dry breaks in the circuit board mentioned above. I simply 'oiked the board out and with a continuity tester and soldering iron made sure all the connections were good.

Now, I have had with my car, on one, and only one occasion, keyed on and the ABS light didn't turn off. I turned her back off and then on again and still it didn't turn off. I stsrted my drive home, and tested the brakes and sure enough no ABS. When I got home, I turned the car off went into the house to find out which fuse the ABS runs through, came back out, turned the car on, and the ABS light had gone off. I've never had a problem since.

Anyway so what I'm suggesting is that you first of all check that the light is coming on when you key on. If not check the fuse. If the fuse is good, strip the RH warning panel out and check all the connestion on the circuit board. Once you've done this you should have some indication of when the ABS is working or not. (ie the light should be on all the time if it's not working) Then it's a case of checking the ECU which is behind the stereo if memory serves me right. I would make sure that the plug into the ABS ecu is inserted firmly and the clip is "clicked". If that's all good then I would suggets the next thing is to have a look at the wiring guide on mkiv.com and check there are no breaks in any of the wires. If they're all good then I would suggest you get a 2nd hand ABS ecu and try that, other than that I'm out of ideas.

Let us know how you get on,

Tony
