Havard
Jesus H Christ. You do talk a load of bollocks sometimes! The word "Sometimes" would suggest a respite in said "Bollocks".....
Homer
True uglyness comes from within. And this woman has beauty in her character, after what she put her own daughter through? While your last statement is absolutely true I have to agree with CJ... You do talk a load of bollocks sometimes!
Nick
I'd get by lying next to that. Just a few session down the gym with me, and she would be on the right path. It's not what she is now, its what she can become. The gym is a wonderful place that transform the ugly into the beautful, it just takes a bit of time dedication, and a bit of encouragement. A running machine isn't going to do much for her face, she'll still look like a bulldog chewing a wasp.

SupraStar 3000
After watching that documentary on her yesterday I would happily pull the lever on the trap door to watch that b*tch hang! Shes sick! Was more interested in ring tones, playing video games and watching herself on tv than the welfare of her own daughter. Not to mention Shannon had been drugged for weeks before with a cocktail of painkillers and travel tablets to keep her calm, and that could of killed her. Charlotte
I was shocked at the drugs bit. Up to a year before. And what of the 6 other kids. She's a child abuser pure and simple. Luckily Shannon got out of there alive.

Luckily Shannon got out of there alive. That was shocking wasn't it. ...What I found a little odd though, the documentary went out the same day she was actually convicted, which must mean it had to be filmed quite some time in advance. I know they had her bang to rights, but is it innocent until proven guilty or, well we're pretty damn sure she's guilty so we'll film this documentary showing you round her house anyway. It just seemed a little soon when you consider in some cases they're not even allowed to show the faces of people involved until after conviction, and then there's appeals etc.

The documentary must've been filmed at least a few days before the conviction, so how did they know? Maybe they filmed two versions, and whatever the outcome, something would've been broadcast. That may be me being slightly cynical though
Charlotte
I presume that with the amount of evidence they had it was a pretty safe bet. That together with the interviews of Karen and that other guy, they basically showed themselves as guilty but the verdict still could have gone either way and the programme would have looked the same. There was a programme on just after Shannon was found and a camera crew followed the family around. It was obvious from that they were disfunctional. It was so right the way the detective said they refused to take responsibity for their actions and went for the pity vote, we did it because we're poor. Give me a break! Thorin
if sharons mum was responsible she should be hanged! the entire community must be going nuts right now that tried to help her! I don't know who Sharon's mum is (or Sharon even), but if she was responsible then I agree.

Then again, if they can pin something on Sharon's mum too (for having her in the first place), then so be it
jamesmark
Shannon Mattews mother has been given 8 years. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/7846696.stm
Carl_S
I feel sorry for her. But there is not doubt that a heavy punishment should be given. 8 years sounds about right, so that's parole in about four to five? I wonder what the judge has recommended. I hope she gets some kind of "help" in prision too. Sometimes mothers who commit crimes against children are given an easier ride in law just because they are women though. Not that the law was ever fair though.

Charlotte
I feel sorry for her. Why? Because she locked her kid up, drugged her and tried to make money out of it all? Or because she's a retard?
Homer
Good news that she's locked up for a few years and good news that the kid now has a chance at a decent life away from those scumbags. Shame about then rest of the kids, some people just have no hope with the start they get in life. One of the comments from the Judge did make me laugh: "Having regard to their low intellect... yadda, yadda"

Carl_S
Exactly Charlotte. What drives a person to do that must either indicate retardation of some sort to feel pity for, or a kind of desire to hurt or manipulate that makes you wonder what she was subjected to as a child. It's also hard to believe that whatever her reason for doing what she did, that there is absolutely no love from her towards her child. The part of her that loves that child, as any mother must love their own child must be hurting too. The child though, and the rest of the kids, let's hope they get more of a chance in life through this somehow. Through this mess there is now a chance for healing and growth for all concerned. The sentence is good news, and will hopefully help protect the most vunerable in our society.

Carl_S
Aww, that would have been so funny had the judge said the "yadda" part. But I guess it would be demeed offensive.
