Guest daz 6576
a coil pack has gone on my brothers audi 1.8t, it has been replaced with a new one and now another one has gone. i see on the whatcar web site that they recommend replacing all 4 coils. what is the reason for this, and is this why a second coil has failed. also would it do any damage to the car to temparerely run it on 3 cylinders until new parts are obtained. robin
I wouldnt run it on only 3 cylinders, unburnt fuel will go through and may damage/overheat the cat.
Guest daz 6576
Hi, thanks for the reply, does anybody know why it is recommended to replace all coil packs and why a second one would fail so soon?
absz
normally the condition of the coil packs deteriorate along the same time span so its good practice to change the set if one is failing. are you saying that the new one you have fitted is gone again or another ? Pabs
TBH mate, you only really need to change the one that goes. However, as I expect all coils were fitted at the same time, you'll probably find others go shortly after. I would not run the car on 3 cylinders - sounds like a tank, performance of a tractor. I know on the VAG range the coilpacks have undergone several hundred revisions (slight exaggeration lol) and the older ones (around J rev) were very bad. Think they are on S rev now so you'd be better with new ones anyway. On another note - I used to find that coilpacks went after a plug change. New plugs perhaps working better triggering the death of the coil, or just the removal/refitting of it would be enough.
Guest daz 6576
original problem was on cylinder 3, but swapped the coil positions to determine which one was faulty. new coil then fitted to cylinder 2, 12 miles later cylinder 3 coil failes again, is this just a coinsidence
Pabs
quite possibly - as mentioned it seems even sometimes removing and reinstalling coilpacks on the VAG cars can seem to kill them. I used VAG-COM s/w and cable to determine which cylinder was faulty - changed it over problem gone. That said - 2 months later sold the car and another one went as soon as the new owner got it home! It's like busses mate, I recon
