formatzero
hi ,another newbie looking for advice.I have been trying to decide what car to buy as i am in my twighlight years and want to buy something exiting before i retire, and cant afford it.My shortlist has been rx8-audi tt-integra type r-supra tt, the only reason the supra is last is because of it's age.You are the people to tell me,does the supra feel like an old fashioned car to drive? The rx8 has been my favoured choice so far as you can get an 05 231 for around 12k,however when you meet a supra on the road they look fantastic.I stay on the west coast of scotland about 100 miles north of glasgow so it's not exactly easy to get a test drive. Are there any dealers you would recommend to buy from?,are there any specialists in scotland who can repair these cars?I notice cars just imported seem to be lower mileage is this better than buying from an owner who has tweaked his?Lastly i have had insurance quotes for both uk car-£207-jap import-£365 why the difference, any comments gratefully recieved. jazz1
mines a 1996 feels like a brand new car and turns heads alot compared to new cars
AndyT
My mate just spent £15k on RX8. No chance I'd feel as special driving that over a Supra mate.
Guest Gaz Shaw
Supra for look's, mod's and the feel of owning a Supra;)
Guest Gaz Shaw
mine is an M reg and feels like new! OK imports are more to insure cos the are abit faster normaly! but in japan the roads arnt salty so rot is rare! and fuel is better there so engine is more looked ater but alot do have mods and some have had bumps and fixed up! mine is import and done 77k miles so good for age! non turbo is 225bhp and T Turbo is 326bhp! i drove an RX8 from england to germany once and was fun but if ya get one get the 6 speed one its more bhp about 220 i think and 5 speed is 190bhp or so! plus 1.3 rotary engine its like a 2.6 but they burn oil fast and if things go wrong its big buck's just like RX7 TT's theres too many now! my mate has a teg type R the uk one [frog eyed one] is 185bhp the revs are long about 9000rpm! the v-tec comes in about 5000rpm. but if u dont drive fast they are 130bhp before v-tec comes in so fuel is good really! but hes not really happy with the power but imports [ square lights] are 200bhp they have a better ecu! dont know any dealers have a look on this site ppl selling them! hope this long post helps! SUPRA!!!!!
AndrewOW
Mine's a 1993 model, and for a few minor rattles (that could easily be fixed), its a fabulously built, solid car, even though its nearly 15 years old. Get a well, looked after low mileage example, and enjoy. Even the auto is brilliant I'm just biased Try them all, and I hope it makes your mind up. Scooter
i would really encourage you to get a test drive. The other cars are ok but i honestly think if you are after a little bit of X factor the supra will provide it. I would advise getting as stock a car as possible, the supra is ultra reliable and being stock almost ensures it will serve you well. As an example of this on Autotrader there is a late S reg manual black TT supra for £8995 which has done 122K miles and which if you enquired i'm sure will have only had routine maintenance in the owners long period of ownership. For absolutely top dollar there is a V reg manual quicksilver TT that has done 66K and would almost certainly IMO perform as faultlessly as the black car for a similar mileage, and IMO almost certainly be more reliable than any of your other choices. If you are not opposed to having an auto (they are great boxes) then there is (if the mileage/history checks out) a great looking low mileage green tt for £7K. I'm biased, agreed! but if you've always been curious about them i see it as my duty to at least persuade you to find one to test drive
bodilx6
supra is a very very durable car, and for some weird reason the exteriour design still holds up. The interieur might be another matter, depending on whos eyes you see through. It is kind of dated and materials today has improved. But you really gutta try out them all within a reasonalbe amount of time as it definately is a personal thing. For example if you go for a 6 speed, some people just ditches it after going once through the gears due to the hard and rather manhandle-needed shifting. make sure to take a nice long ride when you finally find one and then ask all the questions you need here on the forum and check out the buyers guide. I think its in the faq section. Just always bear in mind that people in here can be a bit biased for some reason ;-)
Guest cj748
I think the test drives is the best way to go. But, i think if you take £12K as your budget (lucky sod) and you tested these back to back, the supra would blow you away compared to the others. A massively capable car with not only looks a decade or so ahead of it's time, but rock solid reliability, and best of all handling and performance to match cars that cost six figures. Call a few places down south (more choice, better value) and take a weekend off and drive them all. CJ
AndyT
To add, the insurance difference is common for insurers because they think it's dearer to repair We also have our very own importer who will see you in a low mile Supra that's been personally vetted by him and his Japan team. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=103 Have fun
merckx
The supra is so comfortable and refined to drive especially so an unmodified one, they facelifted the cars in May 96 and with 12k to spend you should get a nice one. The facelifted cars have more modern looking lights, dashboard, improved insulation etc. See if you can get a stock car that hasn't been modified, always the best thing to do if you can. Get an aftermarket exhaust fitted to the TT supra and you won't stop smiling, I hardly listen to the radio. The sound when you accelerate with the window down especially on a nice day is fantastic. You'll feel so superior driving the Supra, the other cars are just ordinary in comparison. The Rx8 is gutless as the rotary engine lacks torque. ps. If you do decide to get one then don't rush into it .There're some really nice ones out there, but In my opinion there're more than a few which have been ruined by tasteless modifications. Ian W
Where abouts are you mate? There's plenty of scottish owners so if you could make a trip down to glasgow you could likely see for yourself. I used to have an n/a supra which i loved but now have an Integra Type R which i prefer and is cheaper to run. Each to their own, i'd suggest trying both. Jamesy W
You would be out of your mind to not buy a Sup, forget the lines and all the rest of it, When your sitting in the driving seat and your foots on the pedal, nothing can wipe that smile off your face..........Well until 4000 revs kick in and you sh*t yourself. Ian W
Ian w i stay in lochgilphead,a small town 100 miles north of glasgow Know where you are mate. I used to live in inverness and used the A82 as my main route down rather than the boring old A9. A82 is one of THE best roads in Scotland imo. Silver Fox
If you like moding cars supra is the one to get. There is endless things you can do to it. You can make it your own, one of a kind thats what brilliant about a supra. Most Rx8's are standard and will always be that way but so many supras are modified and one of a kind car. My mates got an Rx7 and my supra which hasnt been modfied much gets so much more attention. SUPRA all the way!
Todd
Lochgilphead! price of super unleaded there I'd be buying a diesel Growing up round there myself and knowing the roads, I'd go for the Type R, far more suited to the roads. Audi TT with a remap and uprated ARBs is great fun round there as well, not many TTs round that way at all and the run to Oban can be done in 25mins no problem

Tricky-Ricky
Apart from getting a test drive, i would recommend the Supra, especially if your starting to push retirement age, as they can be a real lazy, laid back cruiser, but also a bit of a monster when you want them to be;) i have never driven an RX8 but i do know you have to constantly wring it neck to make rapid progress, and this sort of driving style would just wind me up, speaking as an old git myself;)
hoff
Get a supe:) My 1994 NA auto took the p*ss out of an RX-8 at the weekend when challanged to a spirited drive:) Welcome to the club mate:)
marc_p
I know this a supra owners forum but, can't say I'm surprised. If you ask around, most people who've owned both love the ITR I love my honda's and can safely say the ITR is NOT a boring car to drive and to be honest I can drive my honda's faster on country lanes than I can the supra (supra is on stock suspesion though)
Guest DevilsAdvocate
I love my honda's and can safely say the ITR is NOT a boring car to drive and to be honest I can drive my honda's faster on country lanes than I can the supra (supra is on stock suspesion though) I wasn't suggesting the 'onda would be boring to drive, just boring to look at ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I'm not really into the 'jap car thing' or the BHP/torque/turboboost/top speed/ 0 - 60. top trumps game so when Kaz decided she 'needed' a new car after watching the 'F & F' DVD we had a look at a few and she decided that the Soop was by far the 'nicest'. I did lie to her a bit though and told her that a TT was just an 'Isle of Man special edition' and wasn't any faster Roy ps. I didn't notice anyone arguing that the RX8 wasn't ugly.
