grahamc
Following on from this thread http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=146040 going to try and get my butt into gear and do some of it. So, some questions (going to be more on other topics as well): Where to start? (MSA License?) What car? (single car for now, but if really get into it, will split into 2 or more ) Anything else I need to know? Thanks
michael
You'll need the MSA National B if it's the same as Harewood - £34 http://www.msauk.org/ You might have to join a racing / motor club too: http://www.barc.net/membership/index.php Different venues might have different rules on such things but my local one has a page about it - Gord R might be able to advise too as he's taking part this year. http://www.harewoodhill.co.uk/hwoodspeedhillclimb/competing.htm

Pot
Off topic (Sorry), but doesn't their banner make it look like the Formula ?? car's racing in a muddy field http://www.msauk.org/media/headers/pic_top_home.jpg

grahamc
Would love this: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/281827.htm however may need to to re-assess my budget. Which is around 3 - 4k for the car, making race/rally spec is additional on that. So far, an old shape STi seems to be the best all-round option. Cheap, 300bhp, awd, etc... Opinions? Gord R
If you want any advice on Hillclimbing let me know , iv just got into it after many years specatating as a kid. Did my first event last weekend (harewood) and really really enjoyed it. Think Michael covered alot of info in his post. Car wise , consider class groupings and regs. Also bare in mind these can vary in different regions, i think some of the Scottish sprints/hillclimbs are different classes to down here. 205 Gtis are very popular for Class2 for example. I would go for something a lot cheaper and a lot less complicated than that. If you're doing rallying, you will crash. Guaranteed. You're going to end up going through wheel rims like they're going out of fashion and are quite likely to end up needing more than a few suspension and body panels. I would go for something like an old Astra or something like that. Cheap as chips. You can buy one and have a lot left to make into "race spec", the parts are going to be as cheap as hell, and obviously ridiculously easy to find. OK it's not going to be 300 bhp or be AWD, but to be honest if it's your first foray into motorsport, I would maybe suggest that you don't necessarily need it. I accept that I am going to crash, thats a given! Especially the way I drive Pretty sure I do not need 300bhp to start with, however the AWD is bonus that I do like, so am considering the WRX as well. However will definitely consider the astra, going to go look for them now, thanks!

Pig
A dream for me. One day i will get my ass in gear and look into doing the same! What about a 205 GTI? or a 206 as a good starter car? FWD cars are still suprisingly good fun!
