Wish me luck - Left Ankle Operation tomorrow

Sheefa

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm due to undergo keyhole surgery on my left ankle tomorrow at 11am. Never been under General before so a little nervous plus I'm just getting rid of a cold so whether they will even go ahead with the op I don't know.

What's worse is I don't actually know for sure what they're doing as they are going in to survey the ligament damage and then repair it there and then, it could be a small thing or involve ligament reconstruction. Right ankle also needs to be done in a few weeks time. Hopefully it's the former as this could have a massive impact on the RAF.

Any tips?!! Wish me luck.

Cheers

Greg

All the best Greg.

Any tips? Yeah, shave your arse before you put the gown on. They hide nothing.:D

Ha, thanks and will do. ;)

Do they put a breathing ventilator down your throat when under general? What does it feel like and do they do it when you're asleep?

Ooh good question. I don't know what they did with me. I did wake up with an incredibly dry throat though. I'd assume they do it when you're out to avoid the gag reflex and all that.

I concur.

I had the same in December when I had my knee done. The pipe's are inserted while you're under (well, mine were).

Also, the back of my hand hurt like fcuk where they'd rammed a needle in for a drip:(

Good luck mate.:)

Good luck! Dont worry about the general, you just fall asleep quickly, you wont know anything!

That's all you really need to know, you'll get knocked out pretty quickly, I've always tried to beat when they ask you to count down, but never even got close...

It will feel a bit odd when you wake up, but you'll quickly get your bearings, and there'll always be someone close who'll notice you've woken up and come and see you...

The sore throat thing's true though, but it's not too much of a bother, just don't do what I did once and forget you've just had an op and jump out of bed straight away... Ouch :(

EDIT :- Oh, and good luck :)

Thank you guys for all the great responses. This is my first operation really hence a little nervous.

I've heard about the sore throat symptoms. I also have the choice to opt for a Local. What would you prefer to have? I'm thinking General as I don't want to know what's going on but Local has less side effects right?

General every time mate!!

There is no fuzzy head anymore as the anaesthetics are different these days. I had my op in January and felt great within about 20 mins of waking up.

Two years ago I had a local anaesthetic to have a cyst removed form my rapidly balding head, worst thing I could have done. I was uncomfortable, blood running down my face and could feel all the rummaging going on but no pain!

Never again!!

Do the General fella, the side effects don't last long at all, what time are they doing the op?

11am buddy. No food/water after 6am etc. :)

you will recover from a local a lot quicker, all depends if you want to be awake for it!

I know, that's the scary thing! Not sure I do as having someone play with you ankle and start cutting/scraping/drilling away will feel a little weird, but at least I'll know what's happening instead of waking up and finding what he's done. Going to have a think about it tonight. :)

I think that's made my decision! Cheers H. I'm getting rid of a cold at the moment and still feel a little groggy which isn't good. Therefore, they may cancel the op or perhaps offer me local instead? Hoping it clears up tonight with a good rest. Thanks. ;)

If you go for the general and get over it fast, at least you can get frisky with the nurses, and if they turn you down, act groggy and blame it on the anasthetic :)

Ha, I don't think I'll be able to perform to the best of standards Pot! Good call though.:eyebrows:

Cheers Darren. Will see how I feel tomorrow as long as this cold/flu shifts fully. ;)

It was hilarious when they put the hypodermic thingy in the back of my hand and said ,count to 10,. i got to about 3 then opened my eyes and i was done ;)

This is what everyone says, apparently it's instant and if you're fit and healthy it happens even more quickly. I wonder if I can get to 10 - I'm gonna try! :)
