Guest Mycroft
I must take a closer look at a Supra, I am certain that water will not be a problem, there are ways to do this ort of thing to form 'chambers' mine is a 3 chamber set-up, after driving in the most appalling conditons, very little water gets to the third chamber, and by that time it is almost atomised I should have thought and will just add to the filtering anyway! I have tested pressure drop in both wet and dry and the results are identical, the Soarer filter can take a good soaking and still pass the air thru without any pressure drop! Alex
Chambers within the filter or the box? Sorry a little confused... Though thinking about it I could cut a hole and attach a rubber hose to the bottom of the box and use that to drain out any excess fluid without upsetting the air flow... Guest Mycroft
Chambers within the air tract. Instead of trying to confine the air within a pipe, if instead youhave a chamer that can fill with air and join that to another chamber thru as large an orifice that you can find, then that leads to a chamber that contains the air filter itself, then water is lost in the 2 preceding chambers, the air pressure that washes over the surface of that filter is even and not some 'jet' from a rubber hose which is entirely counter productive. Steve W
Is the Toyota original filter 'as-good-as-it-gets' (airflow), OR, if slightly restrictive, what makes of panel filter for original box are there. ??
Guest Ash
The filter is fine as it is. Toyota basically know what they are doing. They are not one of the richest, most successful car companies in the world for nothing. Sure, the 2JZ engine can be tuned to push out enormous horsepower: If you have mega-money to spare and wish to calculate your engine-life in hundreds of hours... as opposed to hundreds of thousands of miles. Alex... when are you not confused... water molecules are lighter than air molecules. Air changes direction and waves bye-bye water, have a nice day. Yours, J
Syed Shah
Ash, Does that mean that you should not ever fit an induction kit? Even if well setup with plenty of cold air like what you fitted for Justin.

Don't worry if the engine inhales some water spary, so long as it can't inhale a flow of water, such as from getting below a ford or something it will be fine. F3 cars do not run any sort of filter on their air box (the cigar shaped box on the side of the engine on my car below), in a wet race they inhale a lot of spray from the back tyres and it does no harm. Steve Cargill
Have a look at the link below. Having looked at the foam construction of the HKS filter I can believe it... http://www.gtrowner.com/induction.html

Guest Martin F
Isn't this air-filter conversation a bit pointless ? Surely the reason for fitting an aftermarket filter is to reduce the restriction that the stock filter presents, and most aftermarket filters achieve this. But as in most things when it comes to tuning cars there is usually a trade-off and in this example it would be efficiency of filtration. You can't get something for nothing! Surely the better question to ask would be 'At what point does the stock filter become a restriction to breathing in said application ?' As for pod filters, yes they are a bit of a waste when they are left to just suck in air from the hot engine bay, but there are ways around this, i.e. Max Air-boxes and the like. I know that Nathan came up with a good system to collect air from the drivers side front bumper opening (the one that normally feeds the SMIC) and to direct this towards the filter(s). So for those people with FMIC's and some DIY skills this may be a good route to pursue.
