What should my wage be?

I reckon I'm pretty good at what I do, but unfortunately what I do isn't particularly specialised. I do IT stuff for small businesses, installation & support, desktop support, fixing computers, laptops, servers, small networks. I genuinely think I do it well though, but it's not really very specialised and there are loads of people who do the same.

I can't write code or design funky web pages, and I don't know anything niche enough like ancient relational databases or business applications.

So I don't see much of a future for myself outside of what I do, small businesses 'IT person' stuff. I have very loyal customers but I'm not gonna be rich any time soon at this rate!

I should push harder on the monthly standing order maintenance stuff, or charge more for non-maintenance customers. I have about 15 monthly payers and I feel financially more secure than ever, but I couldn't buy a house tomorrow, I don't think.

Funnily enough my dad wasn't an IT contractor, he's a quantity surveyor, he works for mobile companies, set ups in other countries etc. I'm sure there's contracting in pretty much whatever you want to do.

Ah, you're probably assuming I work 5 days a week, actually I only work 7 days a fortnight, so it's a lot less £ than you thought.

I'm just a IT spud mate, same as most of the guys on here back when I first joined. We seem to have a much broader, what's the word, demographic(?), now though.

I'm a contractor though, so get a bit more per day but no paid holiday or sick pay or pension etc etc. It's not all it's cracked up to be, TBH.

I don't get a pension either! I can just about manage sick pay, as long as I still answer the phone :D

I suppose there could be. I have local computer shops passing me their on-site business work. Contracting for them wouldn't be much different.. I'd just be getting less of the money.. or they could charge more.

My wage (Starting at £24k) has shot up rather well, due to me working as many hours as I possibly could on overtime, I've gone well into the 40% tax bracket (Thank god it cuts off now :)) - But I've been able to clear my debts, treat myself, modernise my flat, and get the ££ to get my Sup fixed...

Of course when the Sup's fixed I'll be spending my time driving it rather than working, but the burst in ££ has been nice :) - But it's taken a whole load of hard work, sleep deprivation and so on to earn it, so I feel quite proud about it :)

That would so do me. :)

What do you do?

(I know we've had a "what do you do" thread before, but this one's a bit more informal).

If it wasn't for OT and Shift allowance i (we) would probably be struggling.

I get a decent wage for the area, glasgow was already mentioned, tbh but the life i have chosen to live (supra, weekends etc) is bloody expensive lol.

I love these threads, chap posts asking how much people think he should be paid for a particular role and everyone sees it as an excuse to post how much they get paid for completely different ones.

:D

Anyway I can't help much myself as I have no idea how much your type of people get paid but is there a recruitment site like CWJobs for your stuff and if so maybe it has a salary checker like this?

http://www.cwjobs.co.uk/SalaryChecker/SalaryCheckerSearch.aspx

Edit: maybe this will help:

(or having looked at them maybe they won't)

I'm an eCommerce Analyst working for an insurance company, part of a team who look after the companys 'online presence', basically making sure that we have the right infrastructure (Software, not Hardware), that the 'business' requires for what they want to do, mainly Linux based...

We also offer 24/7 support which is where the ££ really comes in, each person does a week on call, which is £250 (A week when it's your turn) to stay close to your laptop, and with a phone next to you, day or night... All calls start at an hours O/T, even if it's to tell Ops that it's not something you deal with (Ops are good though so usually if they call, it is something I have to deal with)

Apart from that, we have many things (Code Deployments, Logging issues, Configuration changes) that have to be dealt with 'Out of hours' (When the 'public' won't be using our websites) - So these have to be resourced... I'm actually the lowest paid in my team (Newest so lowest grade) and I'm single without kids (The reasons the other team members put in for not going for OOH work, no arguments with that though), so I've always offered my services, on many occasions, it's broken the HSE recommendations, and the companies rules too...

But I've earnt 'kudos' for doing it, which is going to earn me more ££, but has stressed me out big time, and hasn't dont my health much help either... I'm currently in a '6 of one, 1/2 Dozen of another' situation at the moment...

I accept your point, but as I'm also considering another job, I'd like input on what else is out there, so it is some help to us... I'm sure I'm not the only one? :D

How do you mean cuts off? (I don't know anything about tax (or pensions or mortgages, I'm basically rubbish at money management))

Yes indeed. How does that work. I had a letter this morning from the tax man that says: if my income is more than £5313 a year I will pay

- 20% on the first £34,600 and

- 40% on anything over £39,913.

What about the inbetween?? How does your tax 'cut off' despite being in the 40% bracket??

I hate the f**king taxman. Sorry if anybody here does work in the HM Revenue and Customs arena, but god I hate you.

EDIT :- My post made no sense, sorry, I'm not sure how to word how it works... It's a bit complicated if you're on PAYE (Like me), and you then earn more than the next bracket up... My accountant tried to explain it to me, but I pretty much understood it, then got lost... lol

Ahh no they have changed it.

Its now 40% from £34,600 on. No 60% anymore.

No mate, as my letter said, it's 40% on anything over £39,913. It came through today. I know you only pay tax on what you earn above this figure though.
