Boost pressure?

I knew it, reading all this lot has now made me paranoid!

Just got my TT, it's got an HKS-EVC fitted, and a Super Dragger (I think), with both cats apparently in place.

After a good time out on the meet on Sunday, and in giving it a bit of stick on the way home, the Boost guage registers a warning, as does the EVC - both set to 116KPa....1.16 bar right?

The car seemed to reach this level of boost very easily/quickly, is this a good thing or a bad thing? In reading some of these threads I was under the impression that this level of boost was only acheiveable after removing one of the cats....so now I'm confused!

Any advice?

You say you have an HKS EVC boost controller fitted? It is this that is allowing you to run 1.16bar even with the cats in, if you turn the EVC off then you'll probably only make stock boost levels (0.8-0.9bar.)

Running higher boost with both cats still fitted will mean that your exhaust temperatures will be higher, have you got an EGT guage fitted? I would personally remove one/both of the cats, which will make the exhasut freer flowing and should help reduce exhaust temperatures a little.

If you are boosting over 1.2bar then I would adjust the EVC to reduce the boost a little. You could also adjust the warning level to say 1.2-1.25bar so that it is not going off all the time.

I could also do witha bi bit of assistance on this topic.

Hks evc iv currently set at .8 low and .9 high (from previous owner, I didnt touch it yet, lack of knowledge.)

Would like to have it set at aout .8 low and about 1.1 or so high (recomendations welcome)

Violent depowering at about 5000 -5500 rpm

Is it boost cut, fuel cut or both?

Do I need a bcc, fcd or both.

Mkiv.com dont seem to recomment the hks fcd.

Sorry stew123, dont mean to hijack, figure we're both in the same boat.

John, go to http://www.hkseurope.com/ in the instructions section you will find a manual for the EVC IV.

Does the 'violent depowering' at 5000-5500rpm only happen when accelarating hard at high boost, can you accelarate slowly past 5500rpm not on full boost without getting power cut? If it is only when the boost is high (0.9+bar) then it is probably the fuel cut you are hitting. The stock ECU will cut the fuel to the engine if it detects 0.9+bar, so if you want to boost over 0.9bar you will need to fit a Fuel Cut Defender.

Contact Pete at Thor, he supplies his own FCD (VFCC) which many of the members on here use.

Thanks for the info Nic, I don't have an EGT guage (another thing for the Xmas list). I'll really need to get underneath the car and see what exhaust it is...it has an HKS badge welded to the underside of the rear silencer, but the tailpipe doesn't quite look like the Super Draggers on other peoples cars, then I assume its just a case of marrying up a suitable de-cat pipe.

Re the turbos, any way of telling from the outside whether they're stock or not?

The EVC is obviously working in terms of holding the boost at 116KPa as the boost guage needle wobbles around this mark when pushing it...

Hi Stew,

I had the Green Soop on Sunday in New Forest - good to meet other owners. Well done for getting to a meet within 24 hours of owning the car, must be a record!!

Your car had a few mods under the bonnet, but I think it still has both CATS in and probably stock turbos (at least not a big single which would be obvious to spot). I'd get both the Cats removed (or first one only, as it's most restrictive) and switch boost controller off to see what your base boost is. With Cats should be 0.8 Bar (80 kpa I think), without it will probably be a fair bit over 1.0 Bar. Don't go over 1.2 Bar with stock turbos.

You'll see that a lot of people have restrictor rings fitted with a full decat, which are designed to keep the boost within safe limits on a Jspec without needing the boost controller.

You also have a SARD R2D2 bov fitted and a (HKS?) FMIC (front mounted intercooler)

I agree with Nic's comment on raising the warning to 1.25 bar and reducing the EVC to only allow boost to hit 1.2 if you keep the cats in (but you need to watch EGTs)

J :)

Sorry I don't speak Japanese :-)

Jay's comment is right (he was the guy that told me I had both cats still on the car!) ...so maybe this discussion thread needs to change slightly....

At the weekend I'll try switching off the EVC and see what happens - and increasing the Defi guage warning threshold to 1.25 or something...that should stop the beeping!

Then sounds like I'll need to get a decat pipe....or possibly pipes....this may sound like a dumb question, but do I need a specific decat pipe - or will "a decat pipe" be sufficient to replace the front cat??

Second question...where do you get restrictor rings from??

Thanks for all the info guys it is appreciated!

:respekt:

Stew,

(Hope my quick look for cats proves to be right. Might be worth getting second opinion before spending £, although if it's a new import, it would need these for SVA)

UK and Jspec need different decat pipes due to O2 sensor. You can get 21/2" or 3" pipes. Envy/Paul E/Chris Wilson (and others) all do these. Best to get 2 pipes rather than one, as you'll need to put at least one cat back in for MOT. 2nd one is easier to swap in/out as it's under the car rather than butted up to turbos. Bigger diameter = less restriction, but don't think it makes any difference on stock turbos.

The restrictor ring just reduces the internal diameter, increasing the back pressure to restrict the turbos rpm (and hence the boost generated). Cost about £20. Just tell whoever, what boost you want to run. It may need a bit of adjusting as each car is different. Mine needs to be filed out a bit as I'm only getting 1.05 bar, but at least I know I'm not overboosting.

J
