Alex
PLease just confirm something for me... If I shut off the engine and put my hand on the rad it should be very hot all over yes? Should I in fact not really be able to just put my (girlie oversensitive hand) flat on the radiator straight after a run in the car. This is the side of the radiator nearest the fan, reaching over the shroud and through the fan. The ends are hot just not the centre....which I'm assuming is the big area which is blocked. If it is blocked are there any other really evil cleaning products out there? Can I get it it cleaned through ultrasonics if all else fails? Maybe I'll just chuck a load of Caustic Soda in it!!! Any help greatfully received.
Mark Kindell
Just take out the rad and look in the yellow pages for someone who rebuilds rads. They will check it and then just put a new core in it £80-£150ish last time i had one done !

Guest Nick Harris
If you put your hand on the rad directly where the fan is at its most efficient then it should be cool, that is the function of the fan! rads are always hoter where the fan doesn't suck straight thru. Caustic soda is not a good idea. I don't know how to do this, but I do know someone who can, i've seen him do it, I'll see himduring the week-end and gleen the info out of him. I was joking about the Caustic Soda...I'm not that mad!!! If you can chat to your contact I would appreciate it. The edges of the rad are too hot to touch... the centre is barely warm....that can't be right surely.
Terminator
It does sound as if you have flow at the edges of the core but not towards the centre. The engine manual does show how to remove the top and bottom rad tanks to expose the core. Looks like a RPITA using SST's etc. But it may be worth contacting a rad repairer they may be able to unblock it by dismantling.
Adam W
Why not just try flushing it through with a hose?

I have...it stops flowing out crap ...but if you then run more rad flush through it it does it again..the water flows so well round the sides that it never really pressurises the core tubes. Alex
Yep indeed Mark, if they were who you mean't then indeed very good so far. They also do Turbo's, Niessen Intercoolers, Oil Coolers etc etc. As the name suggests they are more involved with Truck parts but they have complete catalogues from their suppliers. Just keeping my fingers crossed that the rad comes today

Branners
There was a post on the NZ tech list a couple of days ago, one of them went to change his rad and found its actually an exceptionally well put together 3 core rad, which is never going to be cheap to copy. So looks like you might have to pay a bit of dosh to get once that flows properly. I know the mkiii rads were marginal at the best of times, do a BHG and slightly clog it up and its never going to be right again, so getting a well designed rad might be fairly essential to keeping the mkiv cool. Anybody else notice the temp gauge just never ever moves from just below half way, no matter what you do to the car.... JB

JB I don't recall seeing it move higher than that and I have FMIC fitted. Come too think of it that includes sitting in traffic on a hot day with the AC on. Guest Terry S
Alex if you fancy a trip to Watford you can borrow my Fluidyne for the 10 of the best. My car won't be ready so you may a well run. Then drop it back to me when you get yours. ( I won't need it for at least 2 weeks.)

You could disassemble, as it says in the book and put some pressure on each coore pipe.
