Was coming back from Hemmel Hempsted on the M25 between juntion 18-17 towards heathrow Sunday morning around 9.45am while on the fast lane doing 70 MPH all fine, in front of me was a silver Mondeo with one of those roof racks carrying 3 mountain bikes on top & all of the sudden roof rack & all bikes came flying off backwards towards me into the fast lane & just managed to steer clear of the disaster into middle lane but saw in rear view mirror all bikes ending in tack still on roof rack stationary in the fast lane & car diving all over the place at high speeds trying to avoid collision.

I ended up calling the police to get car out to scene ASAP to clear it all up.

Hope all ended up Ok & no major disaster happening.

You see & hear of things happening all the time & first time for me to be right behind when it actually happened very scary at the time 3 bikes & roof rack flying towards you, but still alive one piece to tell the tale.

Jeez man lucky escape, would have made a real mess of a Supra. Had a similar one few years back was following a 911 in the fast lane at around 75, all of a sudden the 911 brakes hard and swerves into middle lane. Some idiot builder has forgotton to secure a 10ft + ali ladder to his van, it had come off and was laying completely across the fast lane. Only just missed it, but hitting anything semi solid at speed would have been messy.

I had the same when I spotted a giant metal frame (I think it was for holding up road works signs etc) in the outside lane of the Westway on the A40 in the dark one night. I called the police for them to remove it. Dangerous as foook I had to swerve just like you Lui into the middle lane. If someone was inside there would have been damage.

This is one reason why we have speed limits, Lui if you were doing say 100 instead of 70 would you have had time to manouvre like you did?

WHen I used to work in Leeds, this girlie limped into the car park one morning in her new A3, which dumped the remainder of its oil when she turned it off. She'd seen warning signs on the M1 teling her "Object in Road" but she didn't slow down and consequently went over a large electric motor which ripped her sump clean off. She didn't even stop and drove all the way to work. A few weeks later she was quite surprised to hear from Audi that the engine was totally ruined and no, the warranty doesn't cover you doing that, the car was still on finance too.

But surly a car carrying 3 bikes on the roof shouldn't be doing 70+ in the outside lane..

Similar thing happened to my dad... the fibreglass canopy of a pickup had come loose and the wind grab it, lifting it up and nicely dropping it into the path of my dad. Luckily (he says), my dad spotted it twitching and had started slowing down.

This early breaking resulted in him getting hit squarely on the front of the car with the canopy (rather than going through the windscreen), for a fibreglass canopy it sure made a mess of the car. New headlights, new rads, two new wings, new bonnet, new viscous fan and few other parts. The remants of the canopy proceeded to clatter down underneath the car and damage the exhaust... Not bad for a brand new 328i BMW with 1000 miles on the clock.

If he was doing 100 for a while he would've missed the incident by miles... ;)

:D

Did the guy whose canopy fell off get done on his insurance for it?

Yeah, it was all done properly, and through insurance...but it did make him jump and have an extra whiskey that night..

I remember hitting a mattress once...sort of felt guilty about it. Was driving along the road, when a king sized matress came off the roof of a car... by the time I realized I was on top of it, so the brakes didn't do anything other than ensure I STAYED on the matress...so I kind of surfed down the road on top of his matress, with springs and foam flying from the matress being shredded on the road :p

Felt guilty pulling over and apologising to the guy that his new mattress lasted all of 100m before breaking into pieces...

Well at least no-one was hurt and it all turned out alright in the end.

Was on my way to Petrol Station some weeks ago and could clearly see an object in the road about 500-600 meters ahead of me on the other side of the road. Another car around 300 meters away from it on the other carriage way didn't though and I saw them hitting it at about 50mph. (Turned out to be an Exhaust). Bet they made hell of a mess of their car.

Always check yourself when tying something to your car roof. A few years ago I bought some wood sheeting and had it attached to the roof rack. The guy at the timber yard attached it, and I thought 'well he does this all the time' so thought nothing of it. Then 100yds down the road I braked for a junction and it came flying off the roof and over the bonnet!!! Could have been much nastier, and I always do these things myself now and check properly.

I can match it with another... as a few may know I have a mate called Ben who is my fabricator/welder and also of exploding shed fame...

Well, he rocked up at my house a few months back, came in, made himself some tea and sat down.. When I got in he mentioned that he got me two sheets of plywood... so we went outside to get them off the van to discover that the sheets were missing. It then dawned on him that the slight thud he heard was the roof rack been ripped off the top of his van... Never did get the sheets :)

I had a crash in a MkIII on the M27 years back caused by several tea-chests blowing out of a trailer. Cars swerving all over the place and I hit an XR3 that had skidded in front of me, side-on in the drivers side...I honestly thought Id killed the guy, but he was just concussed against his drivers window. The driver with the trailer was successfully prosecuted for driving with an unsecure load IIRR.

Ouch! That could of been nasty! Glad you are ok lui mate :)

Its like that advert on t.v, dont know if anyone has seen it?

Its where a car drops its roof rack and the car behind has to swerve into the middle lane quickly which nearly causes an accident because this driver is so close to the car in the middle lane...and then all hell breaks loose on the motorway because of this driver's ignorance not to fit the stuff on his/her roof properly!

And whats worse, the driver just carries on their journey?!

As everyone else has a story, heres mine!

Driving along the M4 aboput 2 weeks ago and a CHRISTMAS TREE fell off a trailer in front of me, luckily I wasnt going that fast (around 70) so managed to avoid it skidding toward me, I just see loadsa cars swerving in my rear view mirror, then about 10 mins later theres a traffic report saying theres been two accidents at that place, and the road is closed.
