House Redecorating Options

After a few thoughts please, no negative comments like saying why don't you ask somewhere else because I'm doing that anyway - just thought I'd get opinions from here too.

I'm gonna be selling my house soon, probably next summer or so. The current decor is bad, the previous owner did it himself and made a hash of it. Some bits i'll do myself, other bits i'm gonna get professionally done like flooring maybe as I don't have the tools to do it and I'm not sure if i'm gonna use carpet/wood/other. I've drawn a plan of my house below, it's not to scale as haven't taken any measurements, most is guestimates at the minute. It's no masterpiece but it's just to give an idea :D

The colours represent the wall colours at the min, most except the living room will be changed.

The current materials for the flooring are:

1. Entrance Hall - dark blue carpet

2. Study - same dak blue carpet

3. Bathroom - same dark blue carpet

4. Living Room - crap wooden

5. Dining Area - crap wooden

6. Kitchen - that red slate stuff that just looks old

7. Utility Room - as above

I quite like carpet for living rooms as it's warmer than wood and a bit more homely i think. Was thinking about carpeting the entire downstairs except the kitchen, dining area and utility room, thought about tiles or new slate etc.

As the house will be for sale, i'm more focussed on what buyers want really. Carpet? Wood? Other? Would painting all the walls a plain cream etc be more appealing than colours still?

The living room has a dark mahogany fireplace and anthracite couches. Dunno if the house will be sold furnished as it is or not.

Again what i'm looking for is opinions mainly on how to do the walls and flooring in order to help it sell. Similar to how some people say to help sell a Supra - "take the veilside spoiler off" or "refurb the wheels" etc.

I would go for nice cream carpets and 'Natural Calico' paint which is a very smooth bright shade of cream.

This will make the house look neutral to potential punters and clean and freash at the same time.

Wood floors are OK but lots of people don't like them and carpet is warmer at the end of the day.;)

Yeah that's why i'm thinking. I'm not overly keen on woods because carpet's warmer and just makes it feel more like a home i think, other people seem to love wooden floors.

Yes, the light colours will make the rooms look larger too.

You could always have a look in a few show houses.

Good idea on the show house thing :)

I've repainted my living room in an Ivory colour recently, silk finish. Could do that through out downstairs i suppose, thing about cream carpets is the hallway - the blue shows up loads of white fluff, cream would show up loads of dark fluff :D Was thinking about maybe wood in the hallways....

Good advice

My house was first decorated in bright (even day-glo) colours you normally see in council houses on the TV :D

I've nearly finished the renovation and have gone for white/magnolia walls and some with a hint of yellow. Either light wood flooring or beige/cream carpets. It's totally transformed the house, feels twice the size and three estate agents have added £10k to the valuation that was done 6 months ago. result! Just need to get it sold now

Go boring and paint/paper in light creams and magnolias. White skirtings and light colours in bedrooms etc.

This thread has reminded me that I need to re-decorate soon....:(

H.

100% right, i had a house for sale once and the colours were all over the place, never sold, repainted it magnolia and sold for an extra 10 grand!
