My Dad's car is better than your Dad's car...

Yes it's nostalgia time again :) Someone started this on the MR2 forum and it seemed like a good idea for a thread. Despite the title I've picked I suspect my Dad's cars are dull in comparison to what most of you enjoyed as kids but which ones do you remember going to the seaside in?

Ones I remember my old man owning when I was younger....

MK1 Escort Sport (replaced by a metallic purple MK1 Mexico I think)

http://www.kowalski-net.de/henni/152.gif

Saab 99 (bit of an odd choice IMO)

http://www.motorsnippets.com/cars/graphics/saab/Saab%2099%20GL%205%20speed%20(1983).jpg

Range Rover

http://www.tobiasullrich.de/monteverdi/cars/rr/img6.jpg

Ford Capri (lots of these in a short timescale)

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~hubble/ford%20capri%20side.JPG

Then I can't really remember much until he went a bit tight and started buying crap used cars :)

My uncle always had the best cars, loads of Alfas, a MK3 Supra when they came out, Range Rovers, BMWs before they were really common... etc etc. These days my Grandad has the best car (besides mine of course :)) - an XK8 that never leaves the garage because he always uses his wifes Corsa, what a waste.

So post up some pics, which car did you enjoy being picked up from your mates in or which ones embarassed the hell out of you?

Hmmm we had a c reg cavalier estate in a beigy cream colour, a sky blue mazda 323, an orange Hillman with orange interior (CJ you're not the first!) a suzuki vitara, and sierra 2.0i 16v ghia (that was spanky in those days!) thats all I remember. My mums best mate had an XR2 and someone else an MR2, both D reg. Spot the people who had kids or not! lol

Austin Healey Sprite

Ford Cortina

Volvo Estate

Citroen thing (with gas suspension)

Rover 820i

Rover 820 Turbo

Discovery 2.5TDi

current car is a newer version of the Discovery 2.5TDi

You can see the trend from young man to old age can't you !! LOL

My dad was and still is probably worse than me with cars. Even me little sisters aged 18 & 21 are totally into cars (although they cant afford ins. on bigger cars yet).

My dad currently has an R33 Liner with the odd mod.

He's had bloody all sorts: Mini's (obviously the best car ever :D ), alfa's, Celica GT4's, MKiii Supra's, couple of liners, Bmw 635 CSI (nice car), 3-4 Jags, Merc 500 SL (damn nice car) - there's just a few of the decent ones, but believe me he's had lots of crap too:

Fiat Croma turbo (blew it up every 4 months :D ), G-wagon for off-roading (old style thing that just had no power) - he even had a 3 wheeler robin reliant which he was gonna mod to hell and drag but never got around to it - lol thank god :D

although i did like the Rover SD1 he had for a while

http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/images/policerover_03.jpg

and the range rover was quite nice too

i hated the diesel escort though

when i was a little kid it was great being dropped off in any of those cars, it got a little embarrasing as i got older though :p

Why the fuck did the police buy a diesel escort and fit cosworth alloys and look alike kit?

thats not the one he had

i haven't got any photos of the cars he had i just did a google image search for them!

he has driven some seriously quick cars done up in police colours though, like he tested an early 80's BMW 6 Series DTM car that couldn't be raced because of regulation changes so BMW tried to flog it to police forces around europe!

E Type Jag

Daimler Double Six

Lotus Seven (a real one)

Lotus Elan (1970's version)

Nissan Silvia

1954 Ford F100 Pick-up

1958 Ford Fairlane

1960 Pontiac Starfire (Wide Track)

1965 Mercury Monteray

1969 Mercury Station Wagon

1971 Ford LTD Station Wagon

1973 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser (Station Wagon and the longest wheelbase production car built to date)

Moved to England in '76' and had a bunch of cars so boring I don't really remember them, except one of those 2 door Range Rovers, that was pretty cool.

(edit to say I wasn't around to remember all those early cars personally)

He had a Jaguar XJ6, and a Lincoln Continental. I was a bit young though.

When I was aware of cars he had company stuff, including a MK III supra turbo, which I loved going with him on the drive to London where he worked!!

Now he has a Smart, which I have to say I'm very impressed with. Slower than a high fibre poo, but then it's not the turbo version. I'd get one if they were a bit cheaper.

our old man is lifelong biker so other than my mother wanting a car he never would have bothered - she owns them but he might drive occaisionally.

She's had a succession of fords - escorts, cortinas, sierras.

in one of her escorts she blew the engine up then adopted one of mine and blew the engine up in that.

we are a biker family. i've got 2 , my brother has 2, his fiance 1, our old man has 3 old british bikes, a couple of rough yamahas for commuting and Yamaha v-max for best

when we were little the old man had a bike & sidecar before we got cars - we always said 'why can't we have a car like the rest in our street?' but the other kids thought the bikes were great so the old 'un had lots of street cred.

Can't remember the exact list...but it isn't pretty-since I broke a few of them...(but this is since I was around, there was about 20 triumphs, mercs and other crap before me)

Orange Granada

Green Granada

Silver Jetta

Grey Jetta (snapped the drivers door off it, backing it out one morning as a favour to him, was looking out the door. forgot I'd opened the door on the otherside of the pillar)

Gunmetal Passat (which went to mom, then me) (*KILLED*, motor gave up at 320k miles)

Audi Quattro Turbo (I blew it up, no literally it went up in flames, wire burnt out and set the interior alight)

BMW 320i (100miles on the clock, 1 week old, and I stacked it into a vauxhaul astra)

BMW 328i (3000 miles on the clock when I showed my dad how to drive rear wheel drive, and the back end decided to introduce me to traffic light)

BMW 3 series currently and a plastic 307

Believe it or not my dad still lets me drive his cars

Ford Capri, I remember he had it only a few months after they came on sale.

The first time I saw it was when I was on the way home from school with my mates, it came down the road in gleeming silver, and everyone stopped to stare.

At that time it was hugely different to nearly everything - I remember thinking it looked like a space ship - cool !

PPS.. They say things run in families ..... our lovely daughter Helen, has managed to crash both our cars whilst parked outside our house - although I must admit she was a learner at the time so we let her off with a good battering !!!

My dads always had cool cars, as well as the odd crappy one.

He's always had a Bristol 411 he got new in 1975 and a 1933 Racing Special he bought when I was about two months old. That one has got a Straight-8 going in soon.

He bought another Bristol a couple of years ago and has had a few Jags, a Jeep Cherokee, Chevy Blazer, a Twin Turbo Granada Scorpio and some other things I probably forgot.

Pic of the Racing Special, winning at Brooklands (i think)...
