Guest Geneb
I'm so disgusted at the amount of money the speaker of the house of commons is given for his residence when there is a man with terminal cancer who can't have medical supplies to prolong his life because the local hospital can't afford to pay for something that doesn't work for everybody.... Guest Geneb
You're not serious with this argument are you? Yes I'm very serious if they all stop spending money stupidly, then they would have more money to put into the nhs
DJButler
Yes I'm very serious if they all stop spending money stupidly, then they would have more money to put into the nhs whether he's serious or not it is a real point, i know a guy who is in the position of having to prove the drug will make him live longer before the NHS will give it to him, all because the cost is to great. Just imagine how you would feel being told your not worth x amount of money to keep you alive after paying into the system all your working life. Do you think the PM should live in a 1 bed flat in the centre of London? That would be nice when the President of the US comes over. There are people in this country who occupy jobs of great importance, to see them living in squalour is rediculous! You are obviously out to kick up a stink with such a post without fully thinking through the consequences of what you are saying. If you really want to save money for "the good of the nation" there are better ways!

Pete
Sell his house and put it towards everyone that needs help due to dying from cancer. They'll all get 10p. Not really worth it is it?
Charlotte
I don't think the pm earns 'loads' actually. I mean he gets about £120k yes clearly that's loads to me but for running the country I'd want a bit more than that.

Charlotte
I'm sure it's nearer to 185k. You could work as a stock broker and earn slightly less. I still don't think that's excessive for someone that makes huge decisions, even if they're wrong.

Afraid I've gotta agree here. The breakdown included £30k for "art" to improve the look of the place. I'd far sooner that went into something we all benefit from, such as the NHS. Yes, it can be argued that even sums as large as £1.7million will not go far when spread nationwide, but if all excessive spending such as this were cut back, it would add up to a significant sum. I'm not saying his house didn't need renovating, but £1.7million is excessive. And paralleling it to 10 Downing Street seems largely irrelevant to me. I don't recall the Speaker of the House of Commons being host to the President of the USA. He might have been, but it must have been a private visit Plus, I don't like the bill to cover up MP's spending, which is currently being pushed hard by....guess who....the Speaker of the House! ivan
"The Old Boys Club" definitely needs overhauling by an independant body. Someone who has absolutely no personal interest and who does not report to the House in any way. How about a team headed by Prince Charles? That'd give him something useful to do for a change. Also, bear in mind that as an MP, if you're in a marginal seat there's a fair chance you'll need to find a new job in 5 years' time.

Ah, but it's not a job is it - it's a service they perform for the love of their country. oh boy I crack myself up sometimes.
colsoop
I don't think their actual salary is the issue it is the expenses claims, why should they be given an allowance for a second home along with the furnishings to go with it. Any other job if you had to work in another part of the country they would give you your travel and food allowance and some hotel vouchers and that would be it. Sombody independant need to be used to derail the gravy train
ivan
When did MPs' salary come into the argument? It's hiding their allowance spending that's the issue.
