Update to poor fuel mileage problem......

Just thought I would update you on the fuel consuption problem I have had (for about a year.. dont worry I only drive about 1000 miles a year so hopefully no bore wash of hole burnt in my pocket)

I recently took delivery of my EL dials from Miami GT just after christmas (very nice btw Paul) I had my original J-spec dials which came with the car sitting around at home, so I popped the EL dials on them to see what they looked like... to expedite things I then put the old dials with EL back in the car and swapped out the newer UK spec dials I had bought from the breakers.

Suffice to say as well as my instruments glowing a lovely blue now to match the Air con cluster, my fuelling problem has gone away and instead of getting 160-170 miles per tank no matter how careful I was, my fuel mileage has leaped to 285 miles per tank, which at my caulculations means a difference of 12.9MPG vs 21.6MPG, plus the car drives much better, smoother and less hesitation and surging.

So..... a question for the resident elctronic/tuning wizards (esp Pete Betts) what do you think of this and has anyone seen anything like it? Does anyone know of a situation where the speedo input can affect the fuelling? Suffice to say I think I will give much consideration to a speed limit cut device from THOR as I am not confident in what is going on right now with my car.

From my point of view I am glad to have it sorted out... but I mean I have rest the ECU so many times, bought a new airfilter, new lambda probe picked everyones brains on here, and then it ends up being sorted by putting the original J-spec dials back in.... very very odd. Here's to 23 MPG!

maybe it was just a guaging error with your old dials and you were getting incorrect readings due to miscommunication. (i.e you were seeing an empty tank when in fact you still had half a tank) I would think it incredibly unlikely that your dials would directly influence your effieciency!

well, Red, I measured the trips as well on a map, but I know I was putting in the same amount as it costs approx 50 quid to fill up and I always fill up to the top, so It cant be the gauging, it has to be something to do with speed pulse signals not matching up to throttle poisition sensors or something. I really dont know, the whole thing is very odd and I cant explain it.

well, what really suprises the heck out of me is how some people say they are hitting 28+ mpg on a mk4 twinturbo..... i mean, is that even possible?? what mods would u need? :stupid:

I managed to get 390 miles out of a 60L tank... not too bad.

And I have stage 3 hybrids, 550cc injectors, FMIC, FSE.

:burp:

I'm getting about 17-18 this weather with short journeys.

I suppose if I drove it like a granny I'd get a bit more, but then I may as well get a boring car, if I'm going to drive the Supra like one.

My fuel consumption is definitely worse since I put the Bilsteins on. Its either a mysterious link between shock absorbers and the ECU, or because it handles so much better that I give it more stick :D

 how did u manage that?? mine is a stock jspec twin turbo (auto) mk4... only mods done are a hks induction kit (the big green mushroom) and a greddy type s Bov.... the most i ever got is around 298 miles on a full tank (think it was a trip to leeds :burp: )....

Well I know my odometer under-reads a bit, when it says I've done 100 miles I've actually done about 130. Been like it ever since I got the car and I've not been bothered to do anything about it. I assume it's to do with calibration with the KM to Miles conversion.

Right now I'm piqued too. My consumption is about £50-£55 of optimax (ie a full tank) to a grand 220 miles / 350 km MAX.

jspec injectors, the only thing I have is hybrids and an hks evc 5 in terms of fuel change - any ideas?

Although rumour has it the guy before me had it "tuned" by tuning japanese and the enginge mgmnt light comes on now at sustained boost with low revs (ie bosting lightly in 4th upwards), then the tc turns off. :eek2:

reckon they mucked with my fuel ratios? Could be running rich which might explain the lack of power and stupid drinking ;)

Hmm, didnt think about the way I drove particularly on that 22mpg run, but I really enjoyed myself on the road from Windsor to Bracknell on the way to Bracknell Tyres, so I did see the fuel gauge go down a fair way on just that part of the trip so maybe for the rest of the tank I was somewhere in the 24-25mpg range, and most of the time I drove that tank in West London.

As fr the MPG with mods, well I would assume as long as you are cruising off boost you are only using the minimal amount of fuel, and maybe even less than stock as you will have a less generous fuel map for low loads/revs, depends on your mapping I suppose... anwyay, time t PM Pete Betts for his tuppence worth

Yeah I'm getting under 17mpg. This is ridiculous - I'd expect that if I was running bigger injectors, a big single and an uprated ecu!

I don't cane it everywhere and I have never got 250 miles, even. 220 odd is the utmost I can get.

I'm upgrading soon to an aem full system with guage and getting thor to tune the bitch properly. be interesting to see if it gets much worse - in theory it should be more efficient if it's running rich atm... or at least provide far more power for the same amount!

I don't think either of those statements are right Chris.

No no... don't hold back. Say what you really think.

I'm not seriously suggesting it's going to go UP... but I doubt it will go down too much if it's correctly tuned. If the car IS running rich atm and not responding properly, it's wasting fuel to get anywhere, correct?

So if it's tuned properly, it should run more efficiently - in proportion, ie wasting less fuel. Or is that wrong? do people WASTE more fuel when they tune their cars up and install uprated ecu's and have them professionally tuned?

I hope not. I'd like a pro to tune my car for the max power for the min fuel expenditure, ie not too lean not too rich. perhaps I am wrong about the point of tuning then ;)

All I'm saying is that if I continue to drive as I do after the ecu replacement (no other mods added, just that) then it shuold be more efficient at the same job than the labouring stock with engine management issues etc etc.
