carl0s Posted March 29, 2008 Share Posted March 29, 2008 Now that Apple have released an SDK for the iPod touch/iPhone (yay!) what do you think potential uses for one of these things are? I don't want an iPhone.. well, I can't afford one anyway as I'm locked into a contract, and I don't want to step back in time away from the 3.5G HSDPA that I have with the E51. I use Exchange ActiveSync for blackberry-style push email too, although I read that this had been implemented into some new firmware for the iPhone (awesome!). But anyway, I want an iPod touch, not for music, just because it's a fabulous piece of technology running a seriously cool O/S for what it is. But I'm just not sure whether it'll actually do anything interesting. Watching youtube videos on the toilet is slightly appealing I suppose, but it's stupid that I'd have to wear an earphone to get any sound. I'm just struggling to think of cool things it'll open me up to. I'm hoping the SDK will bring tons of cool things, but I can't think what. Anybody have any thoughts for "cool things the iPod touch will do for you when developers start pushing out apps for it" ? There'll be no Sat-Nav, 'cause it doesn't have bluetooth I still can't believe it doesn't have a basic speaker, but I guess it is thin.. Maybe I should wait, in the hope that Apple realise it's the coolest PDA platform out there, and release an updated one with bluetooth and a speaker. edd_t Posted March 29, 2008 Share Posted March 29, 2008 wait for a new version. i have the itouch, and apart from being a snazzy ipod with the occasional internet use and the ability to give you a head ache squinting at the screen when playing a video, its pretty boring. yes it looks good and works well. but no games, the autoroute is pants without gps and it feels soooooo fragile by the time you've bought a protective case for it, you might as well have gone for a classic because of the size. It is big for an iPod, but that's why I see it as a PDA instead, but without Bluetooth or a basic speaker, it's kind of screwed in that regard. I used it outside McDonalds using their free connection the other day for something I'd left at home. I felt like a proper chav hanging around outside there! I don't intend carrying one around with me all the time though. I am chuffed they support Exchange ActiveSync/AUTD though, as I saw that as a major missing thing on the iPhone when it first came out. boxst Posted March 29, 2008 Share Posted March 29, 2008 I really like my Ipod Touch, great for being on short-haul flights where there is no entertainment and you want to watch a TV program that you have downloaded and converted. Useful for the internet occasionally: I have a "Web'n'Walk' Tmobile USB modem for my laptop which allows free access to Wi-fi hotspots using the Touch. I would like some games, or more applications and hopefully the release of the SDK will deliver some. I actually paid £11.99 to upgrade the software, but nothing was that useful in the end. There are iPod versions of BBC streaming and other Internet radio providers.
