kph-mph converter

Hi all, My 1994 NA has already had a speedo converter fitted but the milage and trip still counts up in kilometeres so I took the clocks out today to check all the wiring was wired in correctly. Upon removing the clocks I noticed that the grey wire from the converter wasnt wired into anything, according to the insructions on the top on the converter it says the grey wire goes to the ecu. Where exactly does this go and will it then make my supra clock up in miles?

Just found a thread in the 'HOW TO' section opn speedo converters but just wanna cheack that ive read it right. I take the grey wire that is supposed to go to the ecu and I splice it into the 2nd wire on the ecu in the middle which is a pink wire, can someone who has done this confirm that is right? Also will this then make my supra clock up in miles? The odo has already been converted so that it says MILES and not KLM or whatever is said before.

Hi Ben,

Not sure what you have read, but the conversion to get the speedo head reading in miles/hour(and getting the mileometer and trip meter to read in miles) is one and the same, however the mileometer will still show the legend/wording "KMS" it will not change this to "miles".

This is done on the printed circuit board for the mileometer and is described in one of the "how to" sections at the top of the tech section.

In essence it means moving the lead/wire from one of the pin connections on the PCB to its adjacent pin to allow the voltage to the "miles" legend to light on the PCB display.

Hope this is understandable/easy to follow.

Note: It will NOT result in the mileometer reading being reset from the kilometre figure to the miles figure(eg 80000 becoming 50000).

This needs to be done totally separately by removing the circuit board, sending it off and getting it "adjusted" by feeding a square wave signal throught the circuit board such that the figure increases up through 00000000 and then on to your desired equivalent reading of "miles".

Usual cost for this service(which I still have to do!) is about £100 incl VAT.

For info I got a quote for this some time ago from NCS at £88 incl VAT and taking about 10 days for return of the board set to my figure.

Ben,

Just re-read your post......is your converter fitted at the gearbox end or behind the clocks?

The cheapo units fit at the speed output sensor and are not considered really suitable. The better units fit behind the speedo heads and are spliced in there.........not sure why you are wiring in to the ECU.........did this come with the instructions?

In its simplest form the speed converter reduces the signal going to the speedo and mileometer by a factor of 5/8ths. resulting in the KPH speedo head now reading "30" when it previously read "50"............the same happens at the mileometer/strip meter etc etc as above.

The speedo converter is behind the clocks, its a small black box with a few wires coming out of it which I think are +12v, earth, speedo sender in, sender out etc... and there is one grey wire which says 'ecu' and this is the only wire which isnt connected to anything!

My speedo works in mph and my odo and trip says 'MILES' next to it but the odo and trip still count up in kms??? Also the car is still limited and I have read that speedo converters sometimes de-limit your car also? Hope this helps, Coz im confused! :conf:

Ben,

Diifficult to know without the connection diagram for the unit and I would caution any picks on a try basis in case you blow the ECU.

I bought my converter from NCS, they are at,

NCS LTD

Riverside

Hallstone Meadow

Mill Lane

Kegworth

Derby

DE74 2GD

and contact Rebecca at NCS Systems [[email protected]]

Think it was £65 I paid.............might be the quickest route in the long run just to fit another unit with good instructions on how to fit.

Yeah that is probably going to be the best option as the last thing I want to do is blow my ecu! I just didint want to spend £65 if someone is able to tell me how to wire mine up correctly. I will defo be giving Rebecca a call in the next few weeks when I get some cash together if I havnt already sorted it. Thanks for the info GEORIGG. :D

Hi Ben,

dunno if this will be any use to you but I bought a converter off of ebay a few weeks ago and it was suppose to be wired in-line with the sensor in the gearbox. i didnt like the idea of this gizmo being outside and getting covered in oil, tar etc.

Instead i wired it furthur up the chain, right in the passenger kick panel. Basically there's a plug which joins to bits of loom together and all the wiring for the speed sensor goes through that.

Im assuming that grey wire you're on about is for 'de-limiting' ie, it stops sending a speed signal above 180KMH to the ECU, which is where a jap spec would normally stop at.

The way ive wired mine in, it changes the signals straight out of the speed sensor, so the trip computer, speedo and ECU all read exactly the same MPH conversion

Does your speedo face go up to 180KMH or 120MPH?

It goes upto 180KPH. But mine is wired in behind the clocks, I think from memory there is 3 wires screwed to the rear of the clocks and 1 or 2 wires spliced into the wiring for the back of the clocks. There is then one grey wire which is left untouched and on the top of the converter it says 'grey - ecu'. If its the same as yours then where does this grey wire go? I found an old thread the other day which showed a 'HOW TO' on fitting a speedo converter which I cant find now and that shows the grey wire going all the way through the dashboard and to the ecu on the passenger side floor and it spliced into a pink wire. Is that what I need to do for the odo and trip to work correctly and for the car to be de-restricted?
