What involved in replacing a diff

Missile

Recommended Posts

This weekend im replacing my broken Diff. I'm taking out the whole housing and replacing with the same.

Is it just a matter of unbolting the Main Drive shaft and the two shafts going to each rear wheel, then lowering it down and raising up the new one ?

All sounds simple enough, I'm sure it won't be. :)

Thought it best to separate the attachment from my post in case it all got too big!

Looking at the manual it appears you will have to remove the half shafts which spline into the diff and then split the drive shaft at the rubber doughnut......not obvious from manual if there are doughnuts on the half shafts but if there are, you may be able to split there without removing 1/2 shafts.

Probably need to remove some of the exhaust pipework, but I've found in the past that manuals tend to err on the side of "remove everything" rather than what's really necessary so you might be able to just move the exhausts out of the way.

Hope you are using axle stands to lift the car!!!!

Too many peeps rely on jacks......not a good idea! Wish you all the best with the job.

Thanks very much, Super handy.

Was going to get the axel stands out but weather is terrible, So im going dowm to my friends work, He works as a Mechanic so just going to give him £20 ish and raise it up on the four poster. He also has all the air tools so if all goes well im hoping for a quick job.

Might take some pics and attempt a step by step for others in the future. All depends if im allowed under the car for Health and safty reasons.

Cheers again for the help. :)

Perfect.

I've printed them out. Will take them with me tomo.

I will update with progress. Lets just hope this second hand Diff works :(

:)

Did you change your diff. yet? If so how did you get on?

I've just got an OEM Torsen LSD unit to replace my non-LSD diff. Having heard from the guy who sold it to me how easy it was to take off (the donor vehicle), I was thinking of fitting the new diff - as a complete unit - myself.

However, having just read the Toyota Service manuals and seen stuff regarding prop.shaft to diff angles, mounting shims, etc. I'm not so sure ...

Anyone else done this and have any comments?

Thanks

Yep all done. I ended up doing most of it myself.

Went down to my local garage where my friend works. We jacked it up and had the old one out and the new one in in about an hour. Changed the gear box oil whilst it was up there. The only trouble we had was the passenger side drive shaft, Half shaft what ever its called. Its not got alot of room to move about, But this was due the my style of exhaust. We undid the two shafts coming from the diff, Undid the main drive sharft, Lowered the diff, Get help doing this, You would NOT want to drop it on yourself let alone your foot. Then again with help raise the new one back up and your pretty much there. We used air tools and had the car quite high, Would not really like to attempt this on a drive way, But if you could get the car up a couple of foot safely i think it would be quite possible.....

Hope thats a little useful.:blink:

Good work!

I was hoping that was all there would be to it. Did you refit using the original mount stoppers and washers (I believe these are what are used to adjust prop. shaft to diff angle)?

Having carried the diff. from front garden (where the donor vehicle was) just to car parked at kerb, I know how bloomin' heavy these things are but thanks for the warning.

Cheer's...:D

Alot heavier than i expected. Worringly i knew nothing of this shaft too diff angle. I just picked up all the parts i got with the diff and the parts i originally had, Chose the parts that looked in the best condition and re-used them. Touch wood all has been fine for a good few months. :)
