Howdo

I just used free php stuff from phpheaven and created a mysql database thru my webhosts and then added the mysql dbase details to the phpforum via the automated gui. I'm not really php / http technical at all and I managed it so you'll be okay. I think the hard thing might be creating a mysql database if your webhost can't do it for you.

Sorry if this doesn't really help but hopefully it might! I can email you the php forum package if you want. I've also got the online php chat package too if you want? Let me know...

Good luck!

Paul

if i get the instructions correctly. i need a copy of windows 2000 or 2003 server and microsoft sql server?

Ideally you run PHP on a LAMP platform (Linux Apache MySQL PHP). This means having yourself a Unix style box (preferrably FreeBSD (http://www.freebsd.org) and not Linux for reasons I'm not going into right now), installing Apache web server (http://www.apache.org) MySQL (Free Database server http://www.mysql.com) and PHP - http://www.php.net

You're best bet is to start reading. Lots. Start at http://www.onlamp.com from O'Reilly network.

You CAN use PHP and MySQL on Windows, but don't expect it to be very stable or fast as it can be.

If you don't understand any of this - leave it to someone that knows what they're doing mate.

I run an ISP and can provide dedicated hosting packages and programming help if required.

We have someone designing our website as I type, how much would it cost for a forum to be set up by a company that does that sort of thing?

Do i need to buy hardware and software or can I have this on someones webserver?

Treat me like an amateur, I'm a comms engineer, I know nothing of web stuff.

Not sure if this is what you want to do or not but I've got my site hosted by Dream Host in the US. They give you 120GB of bandwidth a month and 2400MB of available disk space. You can then register a domain name with them and pay a one-off setup fee. From there, you pay $7 (£5 odd) a month and that's it. You can then setup your mysql databases for your forum, chat or blog dead easy and their support is not too bad either.

It's http://www.dreamhost.com and the package is called "Domain Insane". I've been with them about a year now and never had any downtime or lost any data.

Its just a thought mate - saves you running 2k3/iis or Apache web servers etc and is cheap as chips!

Drop me a PM if there is anything else you want to know about the package or speak to their techies - I'm sure they'll help ya anyway!

Good luck!
