Cams

Having a discussion on another forum regarding HKS cams and someone posted they following ...

Any one care to comment ?

For a start HKS stuff costs a hell of alot of money and most of it is made in factories over here, and the same as other stuff just badged up differently.

Piper make the best cams in the world and in tests on these cars always seem to produce higher power outputs than the other makes. But then an Engine tuner will much rather flog HKS stuff because it costs so much more and therefore line their pockets. Its no secret that Jap car tuners especially with the Supra's and skylines are very secretive and don't tell you much and aren't much help unless you put loads of money on the table. They are just after more money thats why they always try to flog this stuff to you.

For the record i am not trying to be a dick here i am merely just putting my point of view accross and if he's willing to pay stupid amounts of money for HKS goodies then its up to him but remember its not the best out there cos its the most expensive just means they are getting more money out of you

Well, I wouldn't ignore JUN either, although their more wilder ones make the valve lift up to inteference level.

If a trader could make money selling Piper cams for the 2JZ then they would be, I would have thought. If Piper don't make a grind for it then they can't be sold! And, no-one would want to shell out for the initial spec and testing only to have loads of other people buy it wholesale off-the-shelf. On top of that you'd be fighting the established brand names which in the case of cams seem to be worth their weight. How much cheaper would the Piper cams be at the end of all this?

Of course if they were less £ and just as good if not better, bring it on :) I haven't even heard of a Piper cam for any beefy Japanese engine, I thought they were mostly 4-pot Novas and such? Are there any, any specs floating about?

Well, I have read about some guy in the US tuning his Soop to 1132rwhp using a lot of HKS stuff and HKS cams.

He obviously knows his stuff, but it looked like he did not blow up any engines while tuning to this insane power either... I personally would pay extra if its possible.

HKS are supposed to out do all competitors for power on their relevent products so I hear. But this could of been some crap the garage told me in order to buy the HKS brand. But that guy tuning his beast is real.

It may be true that HKS parts cost a hell of a lot of money in the UK, but this is not true in the Far East. For example in Hong Kong HKS parts are up to 40% cheaper than in the UK.

HKS is one of the biggest Japanese tuning companies and haven't got where they are from selling over priced parts. They put a lot into R&D and produce some of the best quality tuning parts available IMO.

Piper don't make any cams for the Supra, and have no intention to do so. They're happy to copy another spec, but for such a limited market, (their words), it would be cheaper to buy the most expensive cams on the market.

I know this, 'cause I've tried :innocent:

Hi matt - off topic but did you get my e-mail :)
