weinelm
Ok, I now have some front ABS hubs thanks to Mr Lovatt (Cheers!). Does any one have any tips for removing the front knuckle from the suspension? See picture of top joint - I need to do upper and lower. From what I've read, you need a special tool to separate the ball joint bit, what would this be? Also is there any special technique for putting it all back together? Any help would be gratefully received!
Scarface GTti
If you`re talking about the ball joint, then yes you can get a splitter. They`re cheap enough to buy or in the past i`ve sprung the joint by hitting the hub either side of it with two hammers at the same time. Although i wouldn`t recommend it on a Supra! Leave that tip to your daily shitters.
weinelm
Would something like the attached pic work? The workshop manuals say to use a Puller (SST 09268-62011) to separate ball joints from knuckle, but I'm not sure what that SST looks like. Am I correct in assuming that once the split pin and nut are off, the shaft of the ball joint is still "well stuck" in the hub, hence needing a spliter to separate? bedlam
Yes They will still be stuck fast..and there are a couple of diff types of splitter..the pic you have there is the fork type...if your going to use the one in the pic..use a lot of grease on the rubber of the ball joint..cause for sure you will spit the rubber on it. dude
In all respect , if you need to ask how to get a ball joint apart do you think you should be working on/installing front suspension , it is rather important to the cars safety !!!! weinelm
Fair point! I was expecting someone to say that! I've done a bit of work on my car before - just not this. Thats why I thought I'd post to find out how to do it first. But there's only one way to learn and thats to try it! I'm confident if I can get the thing apart, that I know how to use a torque wrench to put it together again Can you suggest a more appropriate tool for separating the joint? merckx
Or one of these : http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=040211222 I've used it on other cars, but not on a Supra so far.
absz
Or one of these : http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=040211222 I've used it on other cars, but not on a Supra so far. if you going to have a go your self then buy the ball joint separater that MERCKX has pointed out, as by using the fork type it normally squirts all the grease out of the joint and can split the rubber boot on the joint. weinelm
Thanks guys for the help. Had a chat with my dad this evening. He went into his garage and 10mins later came back with a very heavy duty looking cantilever ball joint separator, a bit like the machinemart one, but beefier! I guess I'll be giving it a go myself! You can buy a ball joint splitter that pushes the bolt part up and out , but this can ruin the threads !!!, all the splitters stand a good chance of damaging the ball joint in some way , id use a large copper hammer .
