kieren1234
Hi all, i have the horrible job of taking the sump off my N/A today because there is a bad oil leak coming from the seal. Can someone explain how to take off the Cross member/sub frame please so i can slide it out as its stuck in the way.

Ric
afaik the subframe needs to be removed? surely the subframe bolts would need to come out, but then i dont know what would happen to the engine, i assume, fall out? lol
Steve
Maybe lift the engine up a little??
Jake
Horrible job. Might as well pull the engine out and have done with it.
Tricky-Ricky
Yep major pain, subframe needs to come off which means wheels and suspension off, which is why i gave mine to a garage to do, as you really need a lift, which seal are you talking about? if its the front crank seal then you don't need to do all that. kieren1234
Hi all, many thanks for your responces. Started this job at 10am and i have still got to put the oil pan back on, along with the wheels suspension, engine mount bolts etc etc. What a nightmare of a job it has turned out to be. I am off to finish it now in the pitch black with the smallest microlite torch ever made. Cannot wait to finish and have a well deserved bear (proabaly a crate actually) :d:d Next time its going in the garage, i dont care that it costs £300 to do!! kieren1234
I have just finished putting it all back together and getting it off the axle stands. That was the hardest thing i have had to do so far. My hards are cut to pieces, i can hardly move my neck, and my arms have never ached so much. Not a job i would ever do again. If the car leaks still i am going to take it to the bloody scrappy!! Thank god its over :d

merckx
My hards are cut to pieces lol Mine are normally like this too, it always takes a few days to remove all the ingrained oil and dirt. I've started to wear gloves designed specifically for mechanics. Screwfix have a good selection of gloves, I can't find the ones that I bought though. flukey-lukey
I use those gloves at work. One pair can last me up to 3 months! They're like a material on the top and thick-ish rubber on the palm. Thin enough to still feel splitpins through, but thick enough not to rip
