Chris Wilson
At Crufts the majority of the GSD's (Alsatians) were following fashion, and most were roach backed with some showing serious movement problems and obvious hip issues. I asked a few breeders why the dogs had changed into a creature hardly able to walk, let alone work, to the point where the police and military are actively seeking other breeds like the Belgian Shepherd, the Bouvier and the Giant Schnauzer. They all responded aghast, and said as one that the breed hadn't changed, and the dogs were fine. Ha! I wish I had got a laptop with me, I could have referred them to this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=NsBi0PehfAM Note too how much smaller Dobermans have become. You can't knock the source, either The Krauts always put on a good display! The other sad thing is anyone now daring to question how Crufts is becoming more Americanised is liable to disciplinary action from those whipped curs who hold them in such awe. A respected member of the dog world has been sacked from his position for daring to utter some valid criticism in a daily newspaer. The show's becoming a parody. fri3ndly
It is strange and I must admit I had noticed that. My girlfriends family have an alsation puppy and there is definately something unique about the way it walks/runs!
keancy
It is strange and I must admit I had noticed that. We always had em when I was a youngster.
Thorin
I agree completely, I love GSD but I think it's horrible to see the "show quality" ones these days.
garethr
It's not just GSDs. If you look at pictures of many dog breeds before and after Kennel Club recognition there are marked changes, and they are rarely for the better. Scottish Terriers, Sealyhams, Corgis, Bull Mastiffs, Bearded Collies, Greyhounds, Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Fox Terriers, Bedlingtons, Mastiffs, Dachshunds...... Paul
I've been disgusted for years about this, shame on the Kennel Club for supporting the breed and it's standard that allows this:( No true dog lover can say that they look healthy or right. Supragal
Interesting about the Dobe thing... there is a marked difference between the Dobes you get from UK stock, EU stock and US stock. The US dogs are huge! Ours is a particularly bad example, about 10k worth of vet bills @ 2 years old he's about 36kg which is about 10kg less than he should be. He's tall enough but if you look at him from the front he disappears!!! lol He's not underweight, just very slight but boy can he run! He is FAST. I wouldn't want to be chased by him! He outruns my mates dobe no problems at all. He's a nice person though so that's the most important thing I guess.
