Chris Wilson
OK, I am NOT getting into the ethics of tail docking, this is just a specific question on the legality of it, and showing in the UK. If i buy a pup from Ireland and opt to have its tail docked at birth, over there it's perfectly legal. It's perfectly legal to bring the dog to England, too, docked. But if I then wanted to show the dog in the UK, but not at Crufts, would I be allowed to? I *believe* the legislation from the Kennel Club states something along the lines of dogs under X years of age cannot be shown at fee paying shows with a docked tail. What is meant by fee paying? Paying to enter as an exhibitor, or paying to go and look at the dogs? Apparently, I am told with conviction, this is a grey area. Anyone know? or know where to ask? Thanks. Ian R
not wanting to cause controversy, im just curious whats a the benifit of docking a dogs tail? It was done for working dogs. So when they went into undergrowth to retrieve, kill or flush out animals they wouldn't snag tails on brambles etc
Chris Wilson
Some would say it's similar to the Jews removing the male children's foreskin, tradition. Some would say protection in thick brush. Some would say it's plain mutilation. Some would say all sorts. *I* am not getting involved though
Chris Wilson
I have received a copy of the Kennel Clubs stance on this, I'd copy it here but it's so long winded (the KC are like that...) I can only attach it as a zipped text file. So for those who just can't sleep without knowing:

Cass
For a second there i miss read the thread title and thought it said " Dogging , who is into the UK dog show scene??" Mabey my train of thought was elsewhere for a brief second I bought my Rotty (Turbo) in Ireland as a puppy and he had his tail docked, but has not done him any harm.I think now adays its more of a look thing for specific breeds. As i have seen a Rotty with a full tail and it just don't look right. Personally i would rather they got to keep their tails. Thing is he is fully eligible to enter shows with or with out a tail.
Gibson Trimming
Coming from a farming family i am totally in favour of a working dog being docked. It is a necessity but I was always against it when others did it for pure vanity though. No need for that. SUPRASUZUKI
Strange how 'working' retreivers, lab's and hounds previously(?) used in fox hunting aren't docked.
