michael
I seem to have boiled my PAS fluid at Elvington today, basically had a slight smell after a 30 minute session (had been on track for about 2 hours in total before that session) and when I opened the bonnet there was a thin coating of fluid on the outside of the reservoir. A few questions relating to this: 1. I'm under the impression I'll have Dextron II that was changed just before Christmas, should this be up to the job of trackday abuse or do I need to upgrade to a better fluid? 2. Should fluid be getting out of the cap? Is it designed to bleed it off if it gets too hot? 3. It's not done this on other trackdays, is the recent Blitz FMIC likely to be the cause of the problem due to a lack of air over the cooler? On the plus side it only seems to have lost a tiny amount of fluid, my brakes were spot on and the car performed better than I could have hoped, even with crappy Maxxis tyres on my track wheels it gripped like a tinker and the track was soaked, lots of fun had
absz
if it was overfilled then its a possibilty the fluid might have leaked out from cap as the oil expands when hot.
Chris Wilson
Elvington will work the PAS hard, it would benefit from a decent cooler. The rack seals will NOT like fluid over 120 degrees C. Something like a small auto box cooler would be ideal.
michael
Thanks for the replies I've got a little 7 row Mocal sat in the garage at the moment - is this likely to be suitable / better than the bent bar thing I have now?
Chris Wilson
Better, but perhaps something a bit bigger would be better still for track days. A lot depends if your new cooler gets a good flow of air through it when fitted. Ducting is king...
michael
I'd rather have too much cooling than nor enough - I'll do some digging around and see what I can find, no trackdays for a while now
Keith C
No use for you Michael as you already have an auto, but can you do the trick of fitting a radiator off an auto and plumbing the PAS through the bottom of the rad where the auto fluid would go, like you could on the MKIII's? Alternatively, for manual owners I guess you could use an autobox oil cooler as I believe were fitted to UK-specs in the passenger rear wheel inlet, or for import owners use the UK spec diff oil cooler mounting in the drivers side one. UK auto owners are stuffed though
Sharpie
Alternatively, for manual owners I guess you could use an autobox oil cooler as I believe were fitted to UK-specs in the passenger rear wheel inlet Nope - They are fitted on the other side to the SMIC up front
Alex
Can you not use another PAS fluid too? With a higher boiling point? And, can you over cool PAS fluid? I wouldn't mind going ott with the cooling if I knew it wouldn't matter...
Keith C
Nope - They are fitted on the other side to the SMIC up front Ah well, even better then as then you don't have to bugger about running pipework down the length of the car. If the 'auto rad on a manual car' thing doesn't work or is insufficient this is possibly the easiest thing to do. Does the autobox oil cooler come with any shrouding or ducting like the SMIC does?
