Jamesy W
I've got a bit of a dilemma on my hands, I've been offered a job with a different company, the work itself is nothing new to what I've been doing. The problem is that I for the local council, which is pretty much a job for life, I could walk in with a shotgun, blow my boss away and I'd probably get a written warning. The new job is roughly £150 per week more than I'm on just now but it's within the private sector so it doesn't have the job security, Do I take a deep breath and take the plunge or stick with the council? Any thoughts welcome.
China Man
is not just cash, how about pension and benefits?
Ady
Ive just handed in my notice here and joining my local council. your perfect when you say its a job for life. Depends what you feel at this moment in time is more important. Have you got comitments? eg mortgage? kids? loans ect? if not then id say go for it. If you have then id think long and hard about whats at risk and where youd be if it all went tits up in your new job.
Jamesy W
The pension transfers over so that the new company takes it over, thats what I'm led to believe. Not sure regarding the benefits though, but to be honest I don't get that much just now.
Lukeyboy2k
is not just cash, how about pension and benefits? Aren't the pension schemes offered by Councils generally quite good compared to other jobs? Is the £150 take home or taxable?
Gazboy
Security every day of the week. And as mentioned, a civil servant of the state gets a fantastic pension.

michael
Do you enjoy your current role? If so that's probably the most important thing IMO, money is great but it doesn't always offset the feeling of extreme hatred you feel each morning when you remember you have to go and sit in a room full of kn*bheads for the day again. Jamesy W
Aren't the pension schemes offered by Councils generally quite good compared to other jobs? Is the £150 take home or taxable? Thats after tax, plus with the new job there is a weeks on call where you automatically receive another £100 in your wage plus £20 everytime you are called out. I'm not a cash hungry whore or anything, I do like money though, I suppose job satisfaction does come into play as well.

Right now I'm my own man, if you know what I mean? I pick the van up in the morning, go for breakfast, work for 2-3hours max then spend the rest of the day driving around bored. To begin with I thought it was great but like everything I've eventually became pissed off. What makes things worse is that because the turn of the financial year all the roofing renewals are finished so I'm gonna be struggling to make a decent wage for the next few weeks. Jamesy W
What job do you actually do mate? I'm a corgi registered plumber mate, but they have me up roofs fitting gutters and downpipes, hardly the most technical of jobs
tbourner
Also depends if you think you'd find it quite easy to find another job pretty quickly or not? If you've got lots of ready skills and there are lots of jobs around then make the move, if it's bleedin difficult for you to find work then stay where you are. Havard
In your situation I would move. You'll be £7800 a year better off. I'd look into the pension side of it if I were you and weigh up the pro's and cons. You have no kids or responsibilities at the moment. As long as you keep some of your extra money to one side should the worst happen then you should be ok. EDIT - You are a plumber, there is never going to be a shortage for them mate FFS. Get gone...lol..!! H.

It's now or never though as I knocked them back just before Christmas after weeks of me chasing them. So whats the new offer then? working for a private plumber company? or double glazing company? The new job is fitting 4 kitchens and bathrooms per week, up until a few months ago I was doing 5 a week until the work ran out.

Plumbers will always be in work mate - if you decide you dont like this job then you can always apply for another. Being corgi registered means you will always have work. Plus, whats the point of going through the registration process to be corgi registered, to fit guttering and downpipes???? i know it involves water, but its not realy a plumbers job is it

Much like this Forum sometimes.. It's going to be had to knock back that much more money and if it all goes tit's up as long as you've left on good terms there is no reason you couldn't try to get back in again.. Jamesy W
I went in earlier on this evening and collected my tools, got a few funny looks as my box hasn't moved in months lol. Not fully decided yet though, another thing that's on the back of my mind is how do I play it when I leave? I'm supposed to serve 2 weeks notice but this company wants me there on Tuesday. The way I see it is- either go on sick leave, use holidays or simply not tell them. I worked two weeks lying time so I'm due that back
