Gazboy
It's very hard for us youngsters, I'm 26 and earn a little over £40,000.00 a year and have a £140,000.00 mortgage. I have one loan for 8k and although earning quite a good salary find my money just goes it's quite depressing sometimes! It's not often a post on this site makes me want to punch the screen, but this one does it. A reality check is urgently needed here.
tooquicktostop
It has never mattered how much I earn, I always spend it and have nothing left at the end of the month, Cars are to blame for me not having any spare cash over the years, but you cant take it with you
Supragal
I agree I reckon you need to be on 60k plus a year to have a decent life, and that includes yours partner being on the same. It's seriously depressing IMO. I'm not even 30 yet but I already know I'm never going to have the things in life that I'd really like unless I win the lottery. Pants. Ian C
It's not often a post on this site makes me want to punch the screen, but this one does it. A reality check is urgently needed here. Agreed. Althought punching the screen wasn't on my mind I'm on considerably less that that, have a 145k mortgage, run the Supra, pay all the bills, and keep my credit card clear and have a couple of hundred left over at the end of each month to stick in savings ready for big chunks like brake discs or a clutch or whatever. Because I don't spend my money on shiny tat to try and fill the void of shallowness that my life is But that's just me 40k isn't much ffs what a berk. I can't help but read between the lines "Oh look a chance to show off how much I earn when I'm only 26 bwahahaa I'm da man be envious be jealous" Well it appears, Mr high roller, that I've got cash and you haven't, so there. Guest Nicholas
40k a year! what do you do? I.T. work for some government accounts. It's not often a post on this site makes me want to punch the screen, but this one does it. Hardly, this thread has turned into a discussion on how expensive modern day life is, you obviously don’t know me very well if you think I was trying to make myself look good and I would also like to add that 40k a year is considered a low salary for London. Apologies for offending the chip on your shoulder I just thought I would post my personal circumstances of how hard I find living.
Gazboy
I don't talk about earnings, savings and money as it's crass, vulgar and shows you have no class, but I'm a grounded chap from a humble background. There's plenty of people on this cold damp foggy island for to have £500 left the day before payday is all but a dream. The average wage is £22k, the median wage, which is a far more realistic measure is £16k. There's a lot of people living hand to mouth so you may want to think about how well off you are in the grand scheme of things when bitching about earning £40k. I didn't bitch I just said I find it hard, but it's self-inflicted as I own the likes of a supra and enjoy the odd nice meal out. As for the second part of your post agreed, there are many people worse off than I am and I suppose you forget how lucky you are in life. I'll leave it at that now as everything I seem to post on this subject infuriates people. I prey JamieP doesn't post his annual salary

Havard
This thread doesn't need to become a pi$$ing contest... There is always someone with more money than you. It's how you use what you have that counts..... I think in the next couple of years we are all going to have our balls squeezed quite hard, mainly by the government... H. 4packet
Especially when you consider cost/time of commuting to London from Leicester!! Thats commitment mate. It's true the point you made of London. You can feel pretty poor when you look around despite being on a seemingly good sum of money. It's all relative though....

tooquicktostop
I think Nicholas took some unnecessary stick then TBH, I moved to London from Bham many years ago, I was in a work group that always complained about not being paid enough for the job we did (chefs), we all knew there was money to be made in London, but how many made the move, just a couple The cost, well I earn more now that I would have in Bham but I pay out a lot more than the old friends back home, My house is small my mortgage big and the cost of travel etc all mounts up 40K at 26 but wants more I say well done mate, thats ambition not showing off IMO, how can you say anything else? tbourner
I'm only on £25,500, the missus is on £15,500, and we owe about £175k. House is worth about £135k at the moment. Not a good situation really, and almost all the non-house debt is due to cars. I've had on average a car every year for the past 9 years, biggest loss was the brand new MG I bought for £14,500 and sold for £6200 18 months later!!!!!!! Debt is too easy to get into, the good news is now I can't get a loan with anything less than 22% interest, so at least I can't get any more debt!! supra_aero
hmmm...very controversial topic here. 40k a year is a lot relative to the national average, but I agree in London its certainly not a particularly high salary. Where does the money go? 1) Mortgage/rent - If you are young, and lucky enough to own a property in London which most likely in todays climate will cost you a min of 200k (Which is as cheap as they come). And even renting for that matter, is very expensive unless you want to live in a hoodlum gangster area or are you lucky enough to split with a partner. Expect to be paying out nearly £800-1k a month. 2) Cost of travel - you will NEED a travel card due to Ken Livingstone congestion charge and extortionate pay and display zones. Again unless you are loaded enough to live within the first 2 zones, expect to pay out £120 a month. 3) Going out /socialising in London - Going out in London is a force to be reckoned with - £3.85/beer or £6.50 a glass of wine are not uncommon. Not going to quote amounts people spend on nights out but you can imagine how much they can rack up - if you can't, I urge you to try going out in London's West End on a Fri/Sat night. 4) Us supra owners in London - Car insurance if you are under 30 will almost certainly be into 4 digits if you own a supra. Certainly not saying 40k is nothing, but I agree somewhat that 40k/yr in London is not a great deal of money if you are young and living on your own in London (NOT LIVING WITH PARENTS - I stress that point!!). But as someone else says, 40k is a lot compared to obviously someone else down the street earning half or a third that trying to make earns meet. It's a tough commute 2.5 hours either way every day and the petrol cost with the recent hike is huge. I'll never live in London again, Leicestershire it is for me I think Nicholas took some unnecessary stick then TBH, I moved to London from Bham many years ago, I was in a work group that always complained about not being paid enough for the job we did (chefs), we all knew there was money to be made in London, but how many made the move, just a couple The cost, well I earn more now that I would have in Bham but I pay out a lot more than the old friends back home, My house is small my mortgage big and the cost of travel etc all mounts up 40K at 26 but wants more I say well done mate, thats ambition not showing off IMO, how can you say anything else? I was similar Dean, I worked in chesterfield for a while and everyone moaned about pay but hardly anyone was prepared to relocate! Thanks for the positive mate, I was just trying to put over my experience the grilling was my mistake for mentioning money. Oh and I didn't know you were a chef! could have cooked me something nice up when you came to pick up that optima

I think it's part to do with how much happier I am being back in Leicester, I lived in London for 2 and a half years and it really got to me in the end. I also drive to stanmore and tube it to westminster so don't hit central London traffic. It's a tough long drive but as soon as I see the leicestershire sign on the way home im in an instant good mood I can go via Milton keynes if the price is right

Once a month if I'm lucky! 4) Us supra owners in London - Car insurance Now add £600/month in child care! We are currently looking at buying a new house and I went to see a mortgage advisor. She suggested a mortgage of over 300k would be no problems to get - costing me.....get this.....about £2k a month! I pretty much laughed in her face.
