couv3z
couldn't you take out a year policy pay monthly then cancel it after a month?
carl0s
couldn't you take out a year policy pay monthly then cancel it after a month? A lot of (most?) insurers only do annual insurance. They put you into a finance deal so that you can pay monthly. If you cancel the insurance you still owe the finance, I think.

I think they had a 28 day cancellation policy

probrox
Adrian Flux gave me the name and number of a company for short term policies last week. They're called HIC and the number is 08451 290290. Might be worth a try
p111ddy
Most Insurance companys have told me no but I'm wondering if you can place it on hold for a while like you can with road tax? would anyone know?

SILKYSMOOTH
I think most companies/policies have a 28 day clause in the T&C's/Contract for you to cancel your policy if you needed to.
Sean1933
Just take out a policy for a year, then canx withing the cooling off period. Normally 14 days but sometimes 28 if a written in clause. Just tell them you got a better price elsewhere, some rediculously cheap price they can beat
RiceRocket
couldn't you take out a year policy pay monthly then cancel it after a month? Usually have to pay a deposit first though but it might be worth it
downimpact
what's to stop you continually taking out a months policy then cancelling with different insurers? besides being unethical?
RiceRocket
what's to stop you continually taking out a months policy then cancelling with different insurers? besides being unethical? Your no claims bonus won't increase will it and maybe after 2 years be lost in this way.

downimpact
Your no claims bonus won't increase will it and maybe after 2 years be lost in this way. True but seeming as you would never actually pay for your insurance it wouldn't matter, there must be something to stop this practice Either that or it's a big scam lots of people do which is why we pay so much for insurance
Soop Dogg
Whenever you decide to cancel an insurance policy, they are within their rights to charge you for any "time on risk". i.e. If you take out a policy to start 10 days from now, you can cancel without any cost to you before it starts. Once the policy starts and the insurer has taken on your risk, you can be charged for the days that the policy was in force. Some insurers (like NU) will try to apply an admin fee. (NU's is about £50, I think) If you fight hard enough and threaten to go to the insurance ombudsman (on the grounds that you are entitled to cancel within the cooling off period 'without penalty') then you should be able to avoid the admin fee. supra steveo
why dont you carry on the cover but just downgrade the cover? put it in a garage and leave the insurance alone on the bar minimum i did this when i went to Iraq and saved a bucket load
