An Apple iTouch question.

I understand that the iTouch can only access the t'interweb via a wireless connection, unlike the iPhone which can connect in a wired way too.

Is that a hack or gadget that would allow an iTouch to connect via a cable/router set-up?

So you can use the itouch to read emails too?

if you bought one now, yes.

If you got an older one i think the upgrade costs like 12 quid.

i didn't realise the iphone could join a network with wires martin? ive not seen the option on mine anyway

You have wireless & edge/gprs

iPhone has wireless support too yes.

I've setup the mail app on my iTouch to read mail on my Exchange server at work (via VPN), GoogleMail, Yahoo mail and my normal mail account.

The older iTouch without the mail apps (requiring the upgrade) should've been discounted at the shop. Mine was at the Dixons (duty free at Gatwick)

No need to mate. It just connects to any wireless LAN and away you go.

I have one - it's very good and so useful when you're traveling rather than hauling the laptop around.

I know that, Pete. The issue is that, at home, we cannot get a stable wi-fi setup working. This obviously renders the itouch internet facility useless when at home.

I was hoping to find something that could be plugged in so that I could connect to my router.

One other thing. Itouch seems to come with or without software upgrades (reflected in the price). What are these upgrades? I can't any reference to them.

A better wireless access point? RJ45 into that from your router? You can't hardwire into the iPhone itself.

Software mentioned here -

Seems a little odd that the Itouch can check emails etc now since it undermines the iphone.. I wonder why Apple did that.

With the both the iTouch and iPhone, does it download emails from pop servers or do you have to log into yahoo etc and check your mail online?

You set up your mail accounts in the mail client and it downloads them. There are few more features on the iPhone which come in handy such as calling the contacts in your contact list and being able to 3G etc if there's no wireless connection handy.

I got the iTouch from Dixons duty free as well. Using it for mail and web access when I can't be bothered using the laptop.

Hello

You can't plug your iTouch into a router, just wirelessly as stated above. You can use it to check Yahoo mail etc.. without any extra software.

If you bought a Touch now you would get the email applications to check POP3 mail. For the older ones (like mine) you have to pay £12.99 to get the software applications.

I think the iTouch is great and I use it all the time to watch TV shows I have downloaded from the internet.

Yup, any POP and IMAP (with SSL)

If you're feeling particularly adventurous you can even run VoIP on it ;)
